Description

Thalictrum Yulia is a medium-sized plant with delicate flowers of pink and lilac pink pompoms. Its vaporous, graceful and airy silhouette is accompanied by finely cut blue-green foliage. Long, dark purple, upright and branched stems carry a cloud of small flowers gathered in fluffy inflorescences, composed solely of stamens. They create a profusion of airy and vaporous clusters throughout the summer, like a pale violet mist.

Thalictrum, also known as Meadow-rue, belong to a genus of perennial plants native to the Himalayas of Asia, from eastern Tibet to western China, belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. They are found in the wild at high altitudes, in forests, scrublands and grassy slopes. Thalictrum 'Yulia' is a horticultural hybrid with an upright and erect habit, forming a fairly compact bushy clump, from which dark purple stems rise reaching a height of 50 to 70 cm (20 to 28in), with a width of about 35 cm (14in). Its slightly bluish green foliage, very light, reminiscent of certain Capillaries, is composed of small pinnate or ternate leaves, with entire or trilobed leaflets. From June to July, large loose, terminal and axillary panicles appear, well-branched, formed of small corolla-less flowers, with multiple pale pink, slightly bluish, lilac stamens. Not liking the competition of nearby roots, a planting distance of 30 cm (12in) around its base should be respected. Meadow-rues, which are quite slow to establish, become more beautiful over time. Their above-ground, deciduous vegetation emerges in spring and withers in autumn.

Thalictrum Yulia is the ideal plant to brighten and flower damp and shaded areas of the garden. With its size, elegant blue-green foliage, as well as its vaporous appearance and beautiful dark purple colours, it is perfect for adding height and lightness to small shaded gardens. It has a stunning effect in contrast with less delicate perennials, as well as along the edge of shrub borders. It naturally finds its place alongside Hostas, Hydrangeas, shrub or climbing Roses, Fuchsias, Japanese Anemones, Aconites, Astilbes. Create a display with shrubs like Snowberries, Elderberries, Nandinas. Add Bellflowers, Ferns, Hellebores, Foxgloves, Grasses, Perennial Geraniums for shade.

Planting and care

Despite its delicate and fragile appearance, Thalictrum Yulia is very hardy and low-maintenance. It simply needs to be planted in semi-shade or even shade, in a moist to wet soil that is rich in organic matter and well-drained, without too much limestone. It can also be grown in full sun, as long as the soil remains moist and there is ambient humidity surrounding the plant.

Planting can be carried out in spring or autumn. Planting at the base of a north or east-facing wall is ideal. Don't hesitate to amend the soil with compost every year to improve winter drainage and facilitate root development. Also, don't forget to water regularly during dry and hot periods. Regularly deadhead the faded flowers to prolong the flowering period. Losing its leaves in autumn and completely disappearing in winter, it will only reappear in spring quite late. Therefore, it is advisable not to cut the plant down in autumn, so as not to forget its location the following spring.

Being a bit slow to establish, it will delight the gardener over the years! Due to its large size, staking may be necessary, especially if this Meadow Rue is used as a standalone plant or in a windy location. To avoid this inconvenience, it is recommended to plant it in the midst of other plants and bushes, against which it can lean. Dividing the clumps is done in March-April, by cutting the clump into several pieces with a spade, but the divisions take a long time to establish. Highly resistant to diseases, it may, however, be susceptible to powdery mildew during periods of drought and to slug attacks when young shoots start to appear.
