This brilliant ground cover is an ideal and versatile ally for vegetating the ungrateful spaces abandoned by other perennials. Its evergreen foliage, with a shiny green colour, carpets the soil in shade or semi-shade and limits the proliferation of adventives. Hardy, preferring fresh soils, it brings brightness to the forgotten corners under trees, hedges, and borders of flowerbeds and hosts a discreet white flowering.

Description

Pachysandra terminalis 'Green Carpet', also known as Japanese Pachysandra, is a ground cover perennial whose evergreen foliage brings brightness to shaded areas. Tolerating root competition, it is the ideal companion for trees and hedges, as it carpets the ground with its beautiful shiny leaves throughout the year. Hardy and adaptable, it prefers cool and shaded soils and is adorned with delicate white flowering spikes, curious and discreet.

Coming from Japan, this subshrub belonging to the Buxaceae family is therefore a cousin of the boxwood. It shares this interesting characteristic: evergreen leaves. Those of 'Green Carpet' are, moreover, shiny. They bring light to spaces with little exposure to the sun, all year round. Oval in shape, they are tough, slightly dentate at the edges, and clustered in bouquets on short branches. The plant does not exceed 15cm (6in) in height and remains compact. It takes its time to settle in, but then spreads over a minimum of 40cm (16in) in width. A discreet white flowering appears at the beginning of summer and punctuates the foliage with small spikes barely a few centimetres long. Arranged in a ribbon, this speckled green carpet with its white mini plumes is very elegant. Easy, low maintenance, Pachysandra terminalis appreciates cool, rich, and light soils.

Pachysandra terminalis 'Green Carpet' is inseparable from shaded corners often neglected by other perennials. Its shimmering foliage brings life back to forgotten spaces and creates a beautiful carpet at the base of shrubs. Alongside Hellebores, Solomon's Seals, and Heucheras, it welcomes Scilla Nutans and limits the proliferation of unwanted plants.
