Description

The 'Shining Beauty' climbing rose offers an unusually coloured flowering in a warm and bright harmony of gold and orange. Its large, well-double roses, beautifully turbinate, exhale a light but very pleasant fragrance, with fruity notes. And the quite fascinating spectacle of its flowering is renewed in successive waves until autumn, much to the gardener's delight. It is perfectly highlighted by its foliage of a beautiful dark green that remains attractive throughout the season. Ideal for embellishing a fence, a small tree, an arch...

The 'Shining Beauty' Rose is a creation of Tönnissen-Verschuren dating back to 2001. This horticultural hybrid is related to the Hybrid Tea and the Floribunda Rose family, whose flowers are grouped in bouquets. Its growth is rapid, and it develops long, erect, green, and more or less prickly and reddish woody climbing stems, flexible enough to be trained. This rose will reach an average height of 2.50 m (8ft) with a spread of 1 m (3ft). Its long stems are covered with glossy and leathery foliage, divided into large dentate leaflets, dark green, resistant to rose diseases under good growing conditions. Its flowers, solitary or grouped in 2 or 3, measure 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) in diameter. They are double and turbinate in shape, typical of hybrid tea roses. Flowering begins in June and continues until October. Their colour, predominantly golden yellow at the opening, evolves towards orange, bordered by strong salmon with a hint of pink. The foliage of the climbing rose is deciduous, and it is absent in winter.

'Shining Beauty', with its flowers in sunset colours, does not go unnoticed in the garden. Like other climbers, it is incomparable for decorating a gate, fences, and small pergolas, but it can also be perfectly used as a bush by regularly pruning it to encourage branching and limit its height. Its flamboyant flowering goes well with that of the 'Prince Charles' clematis, blue, or Miss Bateman, with white flowers. To dress its base, consider yellow or orange flowering perennials such as alchemillas, achilleas, daylilies, and other goldenrods. Its association with the blue or purple flowers of perennial geraniums (Rozanne, Johnson Blue) and campanulas is remarkably architectural. It is an ideal companion for dead trees that it will revive or for sheds that give a charming touch. This plant is easy to plant near any structure, whether it's an arch, fence or shed. It adds sophistication to any decoration without requiring much effort from the planter.

Planting and care

The 'Shining Beauty' climbing rose thrives in sunny locations but should be kept away from hot and confined exposures that can increase its susceptibility to powdery mildew. It is advisable to avoid training it against a south or west-facing wall. Although it does not prefer excessive limestone, it can tolerate it. The rose prefers deep, fertile, moist soils that allow it to reach its full potential. However, it can adapt to any garden if the soil is well-worked and sufficiently rich.

To plant the rose, work the soil by crumbling it and place an amendment - such as blood, fish and bone - at the bottom of the planting hole. Water generously after planting to eliminate air pockets and regularly water for a few weeks to facilitate root development, especially during the first two dry and hot summers. Pruning this rose is only necessary to control its growth. If its spread bothers you, don't hesitate to reduce its branches.
