Description

The 'Vihaïpi' Climbing Rose, in the same vein as the captivating 'Hanabi', produces psychedelic flowers that catch the gardener's eye. Large single flowers, sometimes semi-double, streaked with red, yellow, and white, bloom flashy from summer to autumn. They open on beautiful foliage that shines deep green and is resistant to diseases. With its compact habit, it is well suited for small spaces and container gardening and can be trained as a bush. This unusual variety was awarded a Gold Innovert at the Salon du Végétal 2017.

The climbing rose Vihaïpi 'Trakinsplash' is a recent creation presented at the Salon du Végétal by the Nurseries de la Saulaie. It is a small sarmentous rose with good vigour. It has a flexible habit and thorny stems, often reaching 2.50 m (8ft) in height and 1m (3ft) to 1.20m (4ft) in width when trained. It can easily be kept smaller by regular pruning, forming a beautiful bush of about 1.50 m (5ft) in all directions. Its dark green foliage is not very susceptible to diseases and perfectly enhances the variegated colour of the flowers, which are all different. It blooms from June to October, abundantly if it does not lack water. Its 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) flowers, grouped in clusters, are composed of 5 to 10 undulated petals arranged in an informal cup shape, mostly single, centred on a golden yellow heart populated with prominent stamens of the same tone. They are not scented and are randomly streaked with red, pink, and yellow on a white background.

This 'Vihaïpi' rose allows for creating fantastic colourful displays throughout the summer, requiring very little maintenance except for regular watering in summer during periods of high heat and prolonged drought. Trained on a wall, an arch, or a fence, or even grown as a bush, it pairs well with the white flowers of roses like Iceberg or Aimée Vibert, for example. As a structural element in 'English-style' gardens, rose arches form lovely shelters where one can rest while connecting different parts of the garden. Mix them or combine them with easy-to-grow large-flowered clematis like 'Madame Lecoultre', Montana Grandiflora, or Miss Bateman, whose white flowers temper the whimsical roses of Vihaïpi and Hanabi. They are good companions for paniculate phlox, delphiniums, foxgloves, catmints, and tall baby's breath.

Planting and care

Plant it in well-drained soil between November and March. Roses like clay soil, but if the soil is sandy, compact or dry, add compost to the planting hole. Don't plant it in waterlogged soil in winter. Place it in a sunny or partially shaded area. Roses need a lot of nutrients, so use a specific fertiliser at the start of vegetation and throughout the flowering period. To encourage repeat flowering, remove faded flowers regularly. Prune the stems by about one-quarter of their length (from 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) in March. Prune above an outward-facing bud so that the bush can fill out and the branches don't become tangled in the centre of the canopy. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
