Description
The Penelope Lively® English rose charms with its changing colour and fragrance. Its berry-red buds open into very double, cupped blooms in medium pink, which fades and takes on lavender tones as the days go by. The flowers, borne in clusters, release a fairly strong old rose fragrance, enhanced by raspberry, lemon and a slight touch of myrrh. Repeat flowering and bearing very healthy foliage, this shrub has a place in shrub borders and gardens devoted to cut flowers.
Penelope Lively®, whose varietal name is 'AUSb18a15', belongs to the Rosaceae family and the horticultural group of English shrub roses. This shrub has deciduous foliage that falls in autumn. Selected by Carl Bennett for David Austin Roses, this variety was introduced in the United Kingdom in 2023, after twelve years of selection. It pays tribute to Dame Penelope Lively, the British novelist who won the Booker Prize and the Carnegie Medal, and who also wrote Life in the Garden.
In two or three years, the plant forms a branched bush with a semi-upright habit, slightly wider than tall, reaching 1.10 m in height and 1.25 m in spread in good conditions. The young shoots have bronze-red tones before producing compound leaves made up of five oval, toothed leaflets. At maturity, the foliage becomes dark green, leathery and very glossy. The short, rounded flower buds are a rich red. They open into globular flowers, then into cups that flatten slightly as they fully open. Each rose measures 9 cm across and has nearly 100 petals arranged in quarters. The flowers appear in clusters of four to fourteen above the foliage. Their medium pink colour varies from one flower to another and develops into a cooler pink, tinged with lilac or lavender. The fragrance, classified as fairly strong by David Austin Roses, combines the character of an old rose with fruity notes of raspberry and lemon, accompanied by a touch of myrrh. The petals fall cleanly as the flower fades. Flowering returns in successive waves from June until the first frosts. This variety was also selected for its good resistance to the main diseases affecting roses, notably black spot, powdery mildew and rust. Very hardy, it tolerates temperatures down to -23 °C once well rooted.
This Penelope Lively® variety has a place at the heart of a border, near a terrace or along a path, where its fragrance can be enjoyed and a few roses easily picked. Its broad habit gives it a strong presence, whether planted alone or in groups of three in a large border. It pairs well with the pastel rose 'Desdemona', Physocarpus opulifolius 'Little Devil', hardy geranium 'Brookside' and wild campanulas. Their white and blue flowers, combined with dark foliage, highlight the pink and lavender shades of its corollas.

Planting and care
English rose Penelope Lively® is best planted in autumn or at the end of winter, outside periods of frost and waterlogged soil. A sunny position ensures abundant flowering, but four to five hours of sunshine per day also allow it to flower in partial shade. The soil must be deep, fertile, well-drained and sufficiently moist in summer. Spacing of 1 to 1.20 m gives the bush room to spread. Water regularly during the first two years and in dry periods, without unnecessarily wetting the foliage. Apply well-rotted compost and rose fertiliser in spring to support repeat flowering. Its good disease resistance means that routine treatments are unnecessary.
Roses are often marked, or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These marks are not harmful to the rose; they are a natural phenomenon. Follow all our advice to remedy this and read our article: Help: my roses have marks on them

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
