Description

The 'Rosy Cushion' Rose will delight contemplative gardeners looking for a floriferous, vigorous, low-maintenance variety. This modern hybrid rose is a disease-resistant small bush that blooms continuously from May to the first frosts, producing large and soft pink roses with a white centre sprinkled with very prominent stamens on a heart tinted with old pink. It also has highly ornamental shiny foliage, bronze in colour when it first emerges and then turning green. And like a garden reflects its gardener, 'Rosy Cushion' will faithfully accompany all plants in a slightly wild and romantic garden.

While modern roses are often criticized for being stiff and disease-prone, the 'Rosy Cushion' variety, which is almost impossible to find in commerce, truly stands out. This unique rose, still classified as a hybrid tea rose, forms a small bush with a slightly spreading habit and flexible branches. If used as a ground cover, it will reach a height of 60 to 80 cm (24 to 32in) and a width of 1 m (3ft), but when grown as a bush, it will measure 1.20m (4ft) to 1.50m (5ft) in height and 80 cm (32in) in spread. From May until the first frosts, beautiful 7 to 8 cm (3in) wide roses, gathered in large clusters, bloom on dark green and glossy foliage. They are bicoloured, ranging from white to fresh pink and then to carmine pink, from the centre of the flower to the edges. The darker heart of the flower is filled with numerous golden stamens. The fragrance is very discreet, almost absent. This rose is very easy to propagate from cuttings.

Briant breeding - 1979.

With its simple appearance and modest size, this hybrid rose, 'Rosy Cushion', will surely find its place in any garden. It adapts to all soils that are not too dry and all climates, making it suitable for planting almost anywhere, even in medium altitudes. Planted in mass, it will border pathways and highlight shrub borders. It will integrate perfectly into a landscape hedge, enhancing the foliage of dogwoods and viburnums. It pairs perfectly with easy-to-grow perennials such as geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, snapdragons, and foxgloves. If left unpruned, it will form a flowery dome with soft shapes, exuding a wildly romantic charm in front of a flower-filled shrub border composed of abelias, Kolwitzia, mock oranges, elderberries or shrubby wormwoods.

Planting and care

Planting your rose requires some preparation. Begin by working the soil to a depth of 25 cubic cm and adding a base amendment like blood, fish, and bone to the bottom of the planting hole. Remove the plant from its pot and position it by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Refill the hole and water generously to eliminate any air pockets. It's essential to water the rose regularly for a few weeks during dry weather to help the roots grow. Use a special rose fertiliser that stimulates plant flowering. Choose a sunny location or partial shade to plant your rose in hot regions.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
