Description

The Bush 'Red Eden Rose', also known as 'Eric Tabarly', is a red flower version of the famous Pierre de Ronsard, to which it is related. It belongs to the Romantica series created by Meilland, combining old roses' grace and touching beauty with the floribundity and resistance of modern roses. This climbing bush is impressive, healthy, and charming due to its well-double, old-fashioned flowers arranged in velvety quarters. Its satin purple-red colour shimmers beautifully, and the flowering is even more generous if the plant is grown in the sun.

Red Eden Rose or 'Meidrason  is a modern climbing bush hybrid tea rose obtained in 2002 by the rose breeder Meilland. This climbing bush with an erect habit reaches about 2m (7ft) in height, or even more, with rapid growth. It produces stiff, strong, thorny branches that bear elegant, slightly glossy, medium green foliage, highly resistant to rose diseases if the growing conditions are correct. Throughout the summer, its large, fully double flowers, measuring 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5in) in diameter, emerge from big red, round buds, then open up into very double and globular roses divided into quarters, which open best under the sun and in a rather warm climate. They are solitary or grouped in small bouquets of 2 or 3, carried at the tips of long shoots of the year or emerging on 2-year-old stems. Their fragrance is light.

'Red Eden Rose' is a rose that thrives in full sun, and its vigour is ensured in well-amended garden soil. It is a perfect rose for beds and romantic bouquets. It deserves a wall exposed to the sun (not scorching) or a structure large enough to support its vegetation covered in flowers. It allows for creating sumptuous decorations throughout the summer, requiring very little maintenance apart from regular watering in summer during periods of high heat and prolonged drought. The Romantica series of roses offers numerous possibilities for combinations, for example, by planting Red Eden Rose, Allegro, Palais Royal and Auguste Renoir side by side.  Also, combine them with easy-to-grow large-flowered clematis.

Planting and care

The 'Red Eden Rose' can thrive in any soil, provided it is well-taken care of and given enough water and nutrients during the initial stages of planting. To ensure maximum flowering, it should be planted in well-drained soil prepared beforehand and in a location that receives plenty of sunlight (avoid south-facing walls). It is best to plant this rose in autumn and never when temperatures are below freezing. This plant is hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -25°C (-13°F). If you're considering planting a climbing rose or rambling rose next to a tree, remember that the rose's root system will compete with the already well-established tree's root system. To avoid this, you can plant the rose in a large container with a perforated bottom at the base of the tree. This way, the tree's roots won't penetrate the container for at least a year. After 1 year, you can remove the container by cutting one side without disturbing the rose's root system. By then, the rose will have had enough time to develop its root system and be more resilient.

Roses may appear stained or unsightly at the end of summer. However, it is a natural phenomenon that doesn't harm their development.
