Description

Rosa  'Rouge Cascade' shrub rose is an excellent, healthy ground cover rose variety with incredibly vibrant and endless flowering. This bush is covered in small red roses with golden hearts. With its low and spreading habit, it forms true red carpets in flowerbeds and on slopes or cascades, bright and radiant over a wall or in a planter on the terrace. Exceptionally disease-resistant, it thrives in the sun, without needing much attention or care.

The flowers of Rosa 'Rouge Cascade' are gathered in terminal clusters and come from the polyantha rose, an old hybrid resulting from the Rosa multiflora and Rosa chinensis. This recent French variety has already been awarded four times in national and international competitions, including the highly coveted title of Great Rose of the Century, in Lyon in 2011, in the category of landscape roses.

This small bush has a flexible and spreading bushy habit, noticeably wider than it is tall, partly weeping. It will reach an average height of 45 cm (18in) with a spread of 80 cm (32in) to 1 m (3ft) in a few years. The single flowers, about 3-4 cm (1-2in) in diameter with 5 petals are cup-shaperd and slightly wavy, abundantly and continuously produced from May to October if the soil remains moist. They are eye-catching, vibrant and pure red , a colour enhanced by a discreet white throat and a lovely golden stamen. They bloom in great numbers, in clusters, continuously until the frost. This variety is robust and disease-resistant. It develops an elegant and dense, deciduous, shiny dark green foliage. Its stems are very thorny.

Developed by Delbard, France, 2011.

The 'Rouge Cascade' rose bush will thrive in all soils that are not too dry, and all climates, which allows it to be grown in many regions. It works well as a border plant, in rockeries or on a slope where it will cover the ground. It can also be planted in groups of 3, arranged in a triangle, isolated on a lawn. Plant it en masse or with pink ground cover roses (Maman Turbat, The Fairy) or white ones (Swany) to highlight a path or beds of light or opulent shrubs and perennials. For example, it can be paired with perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, Perovskia. The red flowers are enhanced by the grey foliage of shrubby wormwoods, cinerarias and Stachys. Left to grow freely, it forms a superb undulating carpet that brings life to any setting. It can also be planted in a large container or planter, along with pelargoniums, silver ragwort, Dichondra repens Silver Falls...

Planting and care

Roses prefer a sunny location (at least 4 to 5 hours of sun per day) but sheltered from the scorching midday rays and strong winds. Roses like loose, permeable, and rich soils. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil, but will thrive in any garden as long as the ground is well-worked, well-loosened, and enriched with leaf compost and compost. To plant your rose, work the soil to a depth of 25 cm (10in) and place a base fertiliser such as bonemeal at the bottom of the planting hole. Remove you rose from its pot and position by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, fill in, and water abundantly to remove any pockets of air. During dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to aid root growth. Provide your rose with special rose fertiliser that stimulates flowering. Roses with continuous flowering stop blooming in summer if the soil is too dry, without harming their health.

Roses are often stained or unsightly in late summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These stains are not harmful to the rose; it is a natural phenomenon.
