Received in May, and already flowers! A bit small for now, the rosebush is maybe a bit young to produce the big flowers expected. Otherwise, give me some advice...

Description

The 'Coeur de Rockeur' Rose adds a delightful fragrance to the rhythmic colour of its large variegated red and cream roses. This American novelty is also a solid, easy-to-grow bush that is disease-resistant. An original, with a long flowering period that will be the pride of your garden from summer to autumn. This flower, named after the famous song by Julien Clerc, is also very well-made, with a regular and beautifully turbinate shape. A treasure for homemade bouquets!

'Coeur de Rockeur' or 'Wekgobnez'  is a modern shrub rose with large flowers related to hybrid tea roses, registered in 2007 in the U.S.A. by American rose breeder Tom Carruth. This talented breeder is responsible for superbly fragrant varieties such as Scentimental and Hot Cocoa. With rapid growth, this bushy upright shrub reaches approximately 80 cm (32in) in height and 50-60 cm (20-24in) in width at maturity. It produces strong branches that bear elegant, healthy foliage, are dark green and glossy, and are not very susceptible to diseases. The deciduous foliage falls in autumn. If the faded flowers are carefully removed, the plant continuously produces large modern-style roses, well double, randomly striped and variegated with red and sometimes pink on a white-cream background. They are solitary, sometimes grouped in 2 or 3, carried at the end of long shoots from the current year or emerging from 2-year-old stems. A delightful rose fragrance also distinguishes the repeated flowering.

This Rockstar Heart rose, with its original colour, delicious fragrance, and accommodating nature, is ideal as a background plant in a rose or light perennial bed or as a standalone plant in a small, well-maintained garden. It is also perfect for large, fragrant monochrome borders, as its contrasting colour can be challenging to match. It can be paired, for example, with white or pink panicled phlox, red penstemons, fuchsia pink shrubby salvias, as well as the dark foliage of boxwoods, Blue Cascade Distylium, and cotoneasters. Its cut flowers, with good longevity, are naturally perfect for bouquets.

Planting and care

To plant your 'Coeur de Rockeur', choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-worked soil that is not too heavy and has enough nutrients. Avoid planting in poor and excessively dry soils. Prepare the soil by crumbling it and adding an amendment, such as blood, fish and bone, at the bottom of the planting hole. After planting, water abundantly to remove air pockets and continue to water regularly for a few weeks to help the roots establish.

Pruning modern repeat flowering roses is important for flowering and should be done in three stages:

1. Regular maintenance pruning: During the season, regularly shorten the flowering branches and remove faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves to encourage repeat flowering.

2. Preparatory autumn pruning: Lightly prune in preparation for the 'main' spring pruning. Note: This is not recommended in regions with cold winters as this could weaken the bush.

3. Spring pruning: In February-March, when the buds have become shoots 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, prune the young, strong branches to one-quarter of their length.

When pruning, always aim to remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots while opening up the centre of the bush. Retain the most vigorous branches, generally 3 to 6 well-positioned, to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant ½ cm or 1 cm (0in) above an outward-facing bud.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
