Description

The 'Carmen' Mini Climbing Rose is a very floriferous variety with limited growth and can be sustainably grown in pots or containers. It displays many beautiful double roses from May with a very bright vermillion red colour. This vibrant colour is accompanied by a pleasant fragrance that can be enjoyed in a living space such as a terrace, patio, or balcony. Easy to grow and requiring little maintenance, this hardy Rose can withstand outdoor conditions during winter. Its compact size allows it to bring joy even to a small balcony, provided it receives enough sunlight.

The Rose is the most symbolic member of the large botanical family Rosaceae, which includes nearly 5000 species of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants found almost all around the globe. A favourite genus among breeders, named Rosa in Latin and crowned queen of flowers, the rose comes in thousands of varieties of all colours and sizes.

The Carmen Mini Climbing Rose is part of the series "The Starlets of the Roaring Twenties," ideal for patios and balconies. These compact climbers are suitable for container gardening and offer long-lasting blooms. 'Carmen' should reach a height of between 1.50m (5ft) and 2m (7ft), with a width of about 1m (3ft). It is also possible to lightly prune (during the growing season) to adjust the dimensions of the rose to the available space. The dense foliage is a fairly dark green, forming an authentic backdrop for the flowering. From May, beautiful double roses appear, round and composed of numerous overlapping petals. With a sweet fragrance, these flowers display a sparkling vermillion red colour. In this perpetual variety, the generous flowering continues until the first frost. Removing faded flowers to promote the growth of new buds is always advisable.

With good hardiness, up to -20 °C (- 4°F) approximately, Carmen thrives in sunny or partially shaded locations, although flowering will be more abundant in full sun. Regular watering and fertilisation during the season will allow it to thrive.

The 'Carmen' Mini Climbing Rose is the ideal plant to enhance a small living space. Its abundant, bright, and fragrant flowering will create an attractive scene throughout the summer. If you have more space, pair it with the Sparkler Clematis, another beautiful variety with compact growth that can be grown in a pot. Its large white flowers will complement Carmen's warm colours. To fully enjoy your space, also consider dwarf fruit trees, such as the Diamond Zaipevi Peach Tree, which, in addition to its delicious fruits in the heart of summer, will gift you with a stunning dark pink flowering in March-April, thus extending the flowering season. And, of course, some easily grown herbs or condiments in containers, such as Basil or Parsley...

Planting and care

If you want to grow the 'Carmen' climbing rose in a pot, keep it in a sunny spot and water it regularly to prevent the soil from drying out. In the spring, fertilize it with a potassium-rich fertiliser to encourage flowering for several months. Remove any faded flowers to help the plant continue blooming. Prune the oldest branches low in the spring to promote new growth.

To plant 'Carmen' in the garden, use well-cultivated, well-drained soil. Roses prefer clayey soil that is rather heavy than light. If your soil is too sandy, compact, or dry in summer, add compost, or well-rotted manure to the bottom of the planting hole. Place the rose plant in a sunny location or partial shade. Roses need nutrients, so use fertiliser at the start of growth and throughout flowering.
