Description

Phyllostachys atrovaginata Green Perfume is a beautiful bamboo, of medium size, whose culms change from tender green to grey over time. Ideal in moist or even waterlogged soils.

Originally from Eastern China, it is sometimes called Phyllostachys congesta or Incense Bamboo because its young shoots emit a characteristic incense smell when rubbed. It belongs to the large family of Poaceae.

The habit of the Incense Bamboo is erect, it bears strong canes of 2.5 cm to 5 cm (1 in to 2 in) in diameter, adorned with medium-sized green leaves. Its growth is relatively fast; it can reach a height of 5 m to 8 m (16.4 ft to 26.2 ft) in a few years. Perfectly hardy, it can withstand temperatures down to at least -20° C (-4° F). However, in case of snowfall, remember to clear its culms by shaking them.

Not demanding regarding exposure, it is a bamboo that thrives in any soil that remains moist, but it is particularly suited to wet or even waterlogged areas such as marshy areas or the vicinity of water bodies. Its ability to live with its feet in the water, thanks to its air-filled canals that prevent it from suffocating, is also used in phytoremediation installations.

Phyllostachys atrovaginata Green Perfume is a running bamboo. Therefore, the installation of a rhizome barrier is essential to prevent it from spreading beyond the space you have reserved for it.

A star of Asian-inspired gardens, bamboo suits many styles, from the most modern to the most traditional. Planted en masse, it quickly creates very small, exotic forests, and its striking appearance brings beautiful vertical elements to contemporary gardens and terraces. Its rapid growth also makes it an excellent plant for managing privacy in crowded spaces. Bamboo is so versatile that you can plant it as a standalone specimen. In flower beds, it pairs well with many plants; we recommend planting it with Hakonechloa, Equisetum hyemale, Gunnera manicata.

Did you know? The young shoots, or culms, of this bamboo are edible. They are rich in fibre and low in calories. But don't risk biting into them raw! They should be peeled, boiled for a long time, and cut into cubes or slices before they can be enjoyed.

Planting and care

Grown in containers, bamboos can be planted at any time of the year, except in case of frost. However, the best planting period is late summer and autumn, when the soil is warm and rainfall is more frequent. The planting distance depends on how you will use your bamboos: for a mass planting, allow a spacing of 1.8 m to 2.2 m (5.9 ft to 7.2 ft) between each plant. For a hedge, reduce this distance to 1 m to 1.4 m (3.3 ft to 4.6 ft).

In general, bamboo prefers rich, well-drained soil that remains moist, either acidic or neutral. They can tolerate slightly calcareous soil.

During planting, loosen the soil and moisten the root ball by soaking it. You can add well-decomposed compost and rake it into the surface. Watering should be done regularly, especially during the first year if planted in the ground, and constantly if the bamboos are grown in pots. The establishment period may sometimes seem a bit long, but don't panic!

For bamboos with running rhizomes, the installation of a rhizome barrier (thick and resistant polypropylene film) is essential because these varieties can quickly colonise large areas. The rhizome barrier should be buried vertically, leaving a height of 10 cm (3.9 in) above ground and inclined at a 15-degree angle towards the plant.

In terms of maintenance, bamboo is not demanding: remember to weed around its base, at least in the beginning, until its dead leaves on the ground form a natural mulch. An application of nitrogen-rich fertiliser (well-decomposed manure or liquid fertiliser) in spring and autumn can be beneficial.
