Border shrubs are low-growing, compact, or carpeting varieties, useful for edging a path, dressing the front of a large border, a terrace or the base of a low wall. They remain in place for many years and structure the garden without becoming too large. They are appreciated for their decorative foliage, whether evergreen or deciduous, their flowering or their regular habit. This category brings together shrubs suited to small spaces or more extensive landscape plantings.

Among the most interesting, dwarf boxwood remains a reliable choice to create a neat, regular edge. The Japanese spirea Spiraea japonica ‘Little Princess’ forms a small, dense cushion, covered in pink flowers in summer. Nandina domestica ‘Fire Power’ charms with its changing foliage, bright for much of the year.

This category overlaps in many aspects with that of groundcover shrubs and low hedges, under 1 metre, in terms of their use and size. These shrubs are valuable for highlighting the curve of a path, furnishing the foreground of a large shrub border, concealing the base of rose bushes, or adding relief to a small garden.
