Description

Picea pungens 'Maigold' is a colourful form of Blue Spruce with modest dimensions. In spring, it produces young shoots that are initially creamy white then yellow, standing out beautifully against the mature blue-green foliage. The display lasts about two months before the foliage becomes uniform. With a slender habit, this cultivar develops an elegant conical shape and maintains a modest stature, well-suited to small gardens.

Native to the west coast of the United States and the Rocky Mountains of North America, up to Canada, Picea pungens, also known as the Colorado Blue Spruce or Blue Spruce, is a very hardy evergreen conifer belonging to the Pinaceae family. In its natural environment, it grows slowly, displaying an elegant and very regular conical habit, with strongly tiered horizontal branches. This tree can reach 25 to 40 metres in height, tolerates calcareous soils and some drought.

The 'Maigold' variety is sometimes sold under the name Picea glauca 'Conica Maigold'. It is a German horticultural selection. This is a small conifer with a pyramidal and upright form, reaching 3 to 5 metres in height and 1.50 to 1.80 metres in width. Its growth is slow and steady. It produces short, thick shoots covered with very short, prickly needles, arranged in dense, radial brushes around the shoots. Its young spring shoots are initially creamy white, then yellow from May onwards. For the rest of the year, its hue is intermediate between green and blue-grey. Its scaly, purplish-grey bark is quite decorative.

The Blue Spruce 'Maigold' stands out for its attractive foliage and its compact growth, requiring no maintenance. It can be planted at the centre of a flowerbed or among a group of conifers of comparable size. This spruce is perfectly suited to a rock garden, surrounded by large stones or atop a retaining wall. It also fits well in a contemporary garden with a minimalist style. It can be paired with dwarf conifers with columnar or creeping habits to play with contrasting forms. Underplant it with easy-going ground covers like Liriope, or surround it with double daffodils planted in large clumps.

Planting and care

Plant Picea pungens 'Maigold' from September to November and from February to June in ordinary, well-drained, light, preferably neutral soil, even occasionally dry in summer. Sandy, loamy or humus-bearing soil will be perfectly suitable. Choose a sunny spot sheltered from prevailing winds. In overly damp conditions, it will be more susceptible to root rot. Soak the root balls thoroughly before planting. Optionally, add organic matter at planting time and water generously during the first few years, and in case of prolonged drought. In poor soil, apply a special conifer fertiliser every year in April and hoe the soil in summer. This extremely hardy conifer dislikes heavy, waterlogged soil in winter. Pruning is not necessary, quite the contrary, as this plant reaches its full potential when allowed to grow freely.
