Description

The Holodiscus discolor is a fast-growing bush that is very interesting in summer. The trailing panicle flowering of 10 to 25 cm (3.9 to 9.8 in) changes throughout the season. It changes from pure white to cream white in July and then turns reddish when the seeds ripen in August. It is at this time that, during the hottest hours, the Holodiscus discolor diffuses a sweetly sugary scent.

Its habit is peculiar as its long trailing branches make its shape quite blurry. It is perfect for a fence but also works well as a standalone or in a bed.

The wood of the holodiscus was used by Native Americans to make tools because it is very strong and easy to shape.

Planting and care

Plant your Holodiscus discolor in a sunny or lightly shaded location. Enrich the soil with compost to create a fairly humus-bearing and moist mixture, and add a bit of sand to lighten it. If possible, plant your bush in spring rather than autumn. Pruning should be done at the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Remove any crossing branches and dead wood to simplify its shape.
