Description
Le Buddleja ‘Pink Delight’ est une variété d'arbre à papillons qui se distingue par ses très longues panicules d’un rose franc, une teinte peu commune chez les buddleias de cette génération. Les petites fleurs, serrées les unes contre les autres, sont ornées d’un petit œil orangé. Elles exhalent un parfum miellé qui attire les papillons, abeilles et autres insectes butineurs. Elles se renouvellent pendant une bonne partie de l’été sur une ramure ample et gracieusement arquée. Ce grand arbuste caduc s’installe en fond de massif, dans une haie libre ou en isolé sur une pelouse.
Bien qu’il soit encore couramment commercialisé sous le nom de Buddleja davidii ‘Pink Delight’, il ne s’agit pas d’une simple sélection de cette espèce. Ce cultivar est désormais appelé Buddleja ‘Pink Delight’. Cet hybride horticole complexe réunit principalement des ascendances de B. davidii et de B. fallowiana. Il a été obtenu vers 1986 par l’Institut de recherche horticole de Boskoop, aux Pays-Bas, à partir de ‘Fascination’, ‘Nanho White’ et ‘West Hill’. Cette variété a reçu l’Award of Garden Merit de la RHS en 1993, une distinction confirmée en 2010. De croissance rapide, l’arbuste développe des tiges vigoureuses, d’abord dressées, qui s'arquent sous le poids des inflorescences. Une taille annuelle le maintient entre 1,80 et 2 m de hauteur et presque autant de largeur ; laissé plus libre, il atteint 2,50 à 3 m en tous sens. Les feuilles caduques, opposées sur les rameaux, sont étroites et lancéolées. Leur face supérieure d'un vert grisâtre contraste avec un revers couvert d’un feutrage plus clair. La floraison s'étale de juillet à septembre, voire jusqu'en octobre si l’automne est doux. Formées à l’extrémité des pousses de l’année, les inflorescences mesurent le plus souvent 30 cm de long et peuvent atteindre 40 cm de longueur pour 15 cm de largeur. Chacune rassemble une multitude de petites fleurs tubulaires rose vif, marquées d’orange à la gorge. Comme d’autres buddleias apparentés à B. davidii, l'hybride ‘Pink Delight’ peut produire des semis spontanés. Sa rusticité atteint -15 °C dans un sol drainé. Une fois enracinée, la plante résiste assez bien au manque d'eau.
Le Buddleia 'Pink Delight' s'utilise en isolé sur une pelouse, dans un grand massif d'arbustes ou dans une haie fleurie. Il peut être associé à l’Elaeagnus × ebbingei, à l’Hibiscus syriacus ‘Oiseau Bleu’, au Ceanothus × delileanus ‘Gloire de Versailles’ et au Weigelia 'Nana Variegata'. Le chalef et l’hibiscus, de taille comparable, prennent place à ses côtés. Le céanothe et le weigélia, moins hauts, peuvent être plantés devant ces grands arbustes dans un jardin à l’anglaise ou d’allure plus naturelle.

Planting and care
Buddleja ‘Pink Delight’ should be planted in full sun in any deeply loosened, perfectly drained soil. Autumn is suitable in most regions; choose March–April in areas with cold winters or heavy soils, but September–October in a Mediterranean climate. Water regularly during the first summer, then during long dry spells in the following year. A well-rooted plant will then do without frequent watering, but will flower for a shorter time if the soil remains very dry.
