Description

A shrub with a pyramidal habit that blooms abundantly, Spring Festival Camellia is a rustic variety with small, soft pink double flowers.

This variety blooms from February to May and forms a bush 1.20m (4 ft) in height and 80cm (32 in) in width. It produces small, double flowers measuring 4-5cm (2 in) in diameter, made up of soft pink, overlapping petals.

At budburst, the young leaves are coppery and gradually turn dark green. They measure 5 to 7cm (2 to 3 in) in length and are evergreen. Hardy down to -15°C, this variety is grown in partial shade, sheltered from cold winds. It prefers acidic, humus-rich, moist, and light soils.

Plant Spring Festival Camellia in an ericaceous bed alongside azaleas, skimmia, Japanese quince, and heathers. It also works well as a low hedge.

Its compact size and pyramidal habit also make it suitable for container cultivation. Place it on a partially shaded terrace, alongside a wall, protected from cold and drying winds.

Planting and care

The Spring Festival Camellia should be placed in a fairly shady spot protected from cold and drying winds. You can cultivate it in full sun but the roots must remain cool. Plant it in a cool, humus-rich, acidic, and well-drained soil. The bush should not be planted too deep; the top of the root ball should be covered with 3 cm (1.2 in) of soil. In winter cover it with a 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 in) thick mulch composed of leaf compost and crushed bark. Beware of late frosts that can damage the flowers and buds. Water during dry periods to prevent the bush dropping flower buds.
