Thanks to the individuals (for order preparation and shipping), the specific research area received is healthy. Planted under a Bigarreau Burlat Prunus avium, I am now patiently waiting for it to take root... (or not?).

Description

Compact bush with slow growth ideal for small gardens, Camellia Tom Thumb has pale flesh pink flowers, edged with pure white.

This variety blooms from February to April. It forms a 1m (3 ft) tall bush, with a spread of 80cm (32 in). It produces round, double flowers, very graphic, 6-7cm (2.8 in) in diameter. The petals are pale flesh pink edged with white.

The round leaves of the camellia are light green, measuring 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) in length and are evergreen. Hardy down to -15C°, this variety is grown in partial shade, sheltered from cold winds. It likes acidic soils, rich in humus, moist and light.

Plant Camellia Tom Thumb in an ericaceous bed along with azaleas, skimmia, Japanese quince, and heathers. For a colourful spring scene, plant a carpet of pink and white tulips at its base, such as the Chic Holland Lily-flowered Tulip, the Hemisphere Single Tulip, or the Sorbet Triumph Tulip.

Its compact size also allows for pot cultivation. Install it on a partially shaded terrace, alongside a wall, protected from cold and drying winds.

Planting and care

Camellia Tom Thumb can be placed in a fairly shady location sheltered from cold and drying winds. It can be grown in full sun but the roots must remain cool. Plant it in a moist, humus-rich, acidic and well-drained soil. The bush should not be planted too deeply; the top of the root ball should be covered with 3 cm (1.2 in) soil. In winter, cover it with a 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 in) thick mulch composed of leaf compost and crushed bark. Beware of late frosts that can damage the flowers and buds. Water during dry periods to prevent the bush dropping its flower buds.
