Description

The Caryopteris x clandonensis 'Blue Fountain' is a particularly vigorous variety that offers bouquets of lilac-blue flowers in late summer. Melliferous, they attract pollinating insects. In the garden, this beautiful deciduous shrub will find its place in a border or a large sunny bed. It also adapts well to being grown in a large pot on a terrace. Easy to care for, it resists cold and drought well.

From the Verbenaceae family, the Caryopteris x clandonensis is a hybrid obtained in the 1930s by Arthur Simmonds, secretary of the prestigious RHS (Royal Horticultural Society). Its parents are the Caryopteris incana, a small shrub native to Asia (China, Japan, Korea) and the C. mongolica, a dwarf shrub with large blue flowers that, as its name indicates, comes from Mongolia and China.
The 'Blue Fountain' variety is one of the most vigorous. It forms an upright bush with dense vegetation reaching 1.20 m in all directions. Its flowering usually appears in August and September. The small lilac-blue flowers are grouped in bouquets distributed along the stems. They have prominent stamens, giving them a feathery appearance. They delight bees and butterflies. Its slightly toothed leaves are dark green and turn yellow in autumn before falling.

You will appreciate the Caryopteris 'Blue Fountain' for its beautiful vegetation covered in blue flowers in late summer. It lends itself to many uses: as a standalone plant, in a border, a bed, or a large container. It is an easy-to-combine shrub that can be paired with other shrubs, roses, or perennials. Create a total blue look by combining it with Perovskia Blue Steel and perennial geranium Brookside. Its blue flowers will perfectly complement the yellow flowers of Coreopsis Full Moon Madness or Rudbeckia fulgida Goldsturm. White is also a safe bet with Decorosier Opalia or shrubby cinquefoil Bella Bianca.

Planting and care

The Caryopteris x clandonensis 'Blue Fountain' appreciates the sun and light, humus-bearing, well-drained soils, without excess moisture. It tolerates limestone quite well. This bush withstands cold temperatures in well-drained soil (down to -20°C) and summer drought. Every year, prune it short (to 15 cm from the stump) in March, just before the vegetation restarts. This helps maintain its compact habit and promotes flowering on the new shoots.
