Description

This Evergreen White and Blue Duo of California Lilacs brings together two varieties of California Lilac that retain their foliage in winter and flower between March and May, depending on the climate. With a wide habit forming a beautiful mass of green vegetation, these bushes remain attractive in winter. Moderately hardy, but resistant to drought, they are perfectly suited to coastal areas. They can be planted in a large rockery, on a steep slope, or in a low hedge.

This duo consists of:

1 Ceanothus thyrsiflorus 'Repens': a slow-growing variety reaching 1m in height and 1.20m to 1.50m in width. Abundant and nectar-rich flowering in small clusters of sky blue.

1 Ceanothus thyrsiflorus 'Millerton Point': a bushy variety reaching 2m in height and 3m in spread. Flowering in dense clusters of creamy white with a delicate honey fragrance.

Hardy down to -9°C at the coldest, these two ceanothus thrive in full sun, in a sheltered position, in a well-drained soil, preferably acidic to neutral. A soil that is sandy and rich in compost and does not retain too much water is ideal. Consider their mature spread when planting: a minimum spacing of 1.50m between each plant if you plant them in a mass planting, for example. These bushes will have a great impact if they are planted at a slightly higher level, for example above a low wall, in a rockery, or along a pathway. You can create magnificent displays by combining them with pink or white rockroses, Euphorbia characias ssp. wulfenii, and creeping mimosa 'Limelight'.

Planting and care

Ceanothus thyrsifolius should be planted in early autumn or spring in a very sunny location, sheltered from cold and dry winds in well-drained soil that does not retain too much water. It can tolerate some limestone but prefers slightly acidic soil. A mixture of compost and non-limestone sand or gravel will suit it. To promote establishment, water abundantly at planting, then once a week for the first two or three months (especially if it is dry). A generous, but spaced out watering is much preferable to frequent, but shallow watering: ceanothus is sensitive to a fungal disease of the collar that occurs in soils that are both hot and constantly moist. From the second summer onwards, the bush can do without watering.
