Description

Euonymus europaeus 'Red Cascade' is a variety of European spindle. Its abundant fruiting causes the branches to arch in late summer and much of the winter. The foliage takes on a very intense red colour at the first signs of cool temperatures, making the bush particularly remarkable and ornamental. This deciduous bush is ideal for hedges, borders, or as a standalone plant to admire its unique fruiting characteristics.

Euonymus europaeus is a very common species belonging to the celastraceae family. This already very elegant natural species has given rise to some highly appreciated horticultural varieties in gardens. 'Red Cascade' has an upright habit and, when fully grown, reaches a height of 3m (9 to 10ft) and a spread of 2m (6 to 7ft). Its foliage is medium green in summer, consisting of elongated oval leaves. These leaves turn intense red-purple before falling, becoming messengers of winter. A spring flowering in April, with white-green flowers, gives way to bright red-pink fruits in late summer, contrasting with its branches and green foliage. When opened, the fruit shells reveal bright orange seeds. This mix of colours will brighten up your winter with warm hues and attract birds that feed on these colourful fruits. It is the abundant fruiting that causes the large branches of the bush to bend, and the particularly intense colour of the foliage that earned it the name 'Red Cascade'.

Perfectly hardy, Euonymus 'Red Cascade' thrives in full sun exposure, or in partial shade. It prefers a humus-bearing, ordinary, moist soil. It is a low-maintenance shrub.

It can be planted in a hedgerow, associated with hawthorns or strawberry trees that will highlight its fruiting during the winter, or in borders or as a standalone plant.
