Description

The 'Cobb Valley' Hebe is a hardy and evergreen bush. This Shrubby Veronica is among the small-leaved Hebes, and is particularly decorative thanks to its blue-green foliage that remains attractive all year round in most regions. It has white flowers and will be ideal for dressing up your rockeries and borders.

Plants of the genus Hebe are native to New Zealand and belong to the family of Plantaginaceae. They are also known as Shrubby Veronicas. The variety 'Cobb Valley' has a compact, dense, and upright habit. At maturity it reaches 50 cm (20 in) in height and 60 cm (24 in) in width. We love its soft and blue-green foliage. The leaves do not exceed 1.5 cm (0.6 in) in length; they are opposite, ovate in shape, and develop symmetrically on an axis. Its flowers appear during the month of June, in the form of small spikes bringing together a multitude of white flowers.

Grow in full sun or partial shade. The 'Cobb Valley' Hebe likes rich or poor, moist but well-drained soils that are not too acidic. 'Cobb Valley' has good hardiness, it will withstand temperatures around -10°C (14 °F), or sometimes -15°C (5 °F) if you ensure perfect drainage and a sheltered location; you can protect it with a thick mulch of leaves for extra security. This small structural bush is useful for demarcating your flowerbeds and will be ideal in combination with perennials such as Nepetas, or in rockeries with Sedums.

Planting and care

In gardens with a wet climate, the 'Cobb Valley' Hebe should be reserved for rockeries or sloping banks. If cultivated in open ground in northern Europe, make sure to provide it with good drainage; in more continental areas, protect the plant in winter with a fleece or a thick layer of leaves. Avoid pruning this Shrubby Veronica; however it is advisable to clean the Hebe of faded blooms once flowering is over. Remove any dead branches to preserve its compact habit.
