Description

Hebe 'Lady Ann' is a small evergreen bush. It will charm you with its green leaves edged with white, which turn pink in winter. Violet spring flowering is the icing on the cake. Ideal in a pot or in a border.

Hebe 'Lady Ann', also known as Shrubby Veronica, is a small and bushy spreading shrub. At maturity it will reach a height and spread of 0.60m (2 ft). Its foliage is evergreen and decorative, composed of lanceolate leaves, strictly arranged, opposite and geometrically on brown stems. In autumn and winter the white margin of the leaves turns pink. Flowering spikes 7cm (3 in) tall appear in May and June, consisting of purple flowers with a well-developed white style (part of the female organ) that contrasts with the violet petals.

Its decorative foliage and resistance to drought make it a good small bush for containers or rockeries, but it will also thrive in beds with other perennials.

It needs full sun or partial shade, and well-drained, moist and rich soil. It can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14 °F).

Planting and care

In gardens with a wet climate, Hebes should be reserved for rockeries or sloping banks. It enjoys a rich soil that is always well-drained. In the colder regions of Northern Europe it is necessary to protect these shrubs during winter or cultivate them in pots, bringing them indoors during periods of freezing weather. One should avoid pruning this Shrubby Veronica, however it is advisable to clean the Hebe of faded blooms once flowering is over. Remove any dead branches to preserve its compact habit.
