Received in good condition, and seems to be performing very well since planting. Planted in June, it's still flowering. I took the risk of planting it under a tree. Nevertheless, it's on the edge and receiving enough southwest light.

Description

Hibiscus syriacus Eruption® is a new variety of Althaea that offers large, semi-double purple flowers that are slightly crumpled, with a diameter of 10 cm (3.9 in).

Also known as "Tree Mallow," this Althaea has an upright habit, dense and harmoniously ramified. It is a recent creation (Minier 2009). The deciduous leaves are alternate, simple, crenate, and 10 cm (3.9 in) long, with a dark green colour. The large cup-shaped flowers, semi-double, with a diameter of 10 cm (3.9 in), are purple, slightly crumpled, and last from July to October.

Native to China, Hibiscus syriacus prefers a fresh, rich, well-drained soil, preferably neutral, although it can tolerate limestone in a well-exposed and airy location. Remove faded flowers as they can hinder the plant's growth.

Hardy down to -20 °C (-4 °F), Hibiscus syriacus Eruption® can be used as a standalone plant, in borders, or as a free-standing hedge alongside other shrubs such as buddleia or laurustinus.

Planting and care

Hibiscus syriacus Eruption® should be planted in autumn in a rich, fresh, well-drained soil in full sun. Water thoroughly in summer and remove faded flowers as they appear as fruiting can harm the plant. Prune heavily every year from February to June. It may be prone to attacks from aphids, scale insects, whiteflies and powdery mildew. Apply necessary fungicides after any risk of frost. Propagation is via cuttings of dried wood in November.
