Description
Hydrangea arborescens ‘Stand up Pink' is a recent introduction of this type of Hydrangea with pink flowers, the classic varieties being white. This very hardy shrub forms a compact, dense clump wider than it is tall, with upright and sturdy stems. The bright green foliage serves as a setting for the large pale pink inflorescences, which bloom throughout the summer. Resisting rain well thanks to the robust stems that support them, the flowers are also highly appreciated in cut flower arrangements. Undemanding regarding soil type, this Hydrangea can be grown in containers as well as in the garden in a sunny to partially shaded border.
Hydrangea belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family, which shares its name, alongside other popular genera such as Deutzia or Philadelphus (Mock Oranges). Hydrangea arborescens, or Smooth Hydrangea, is a botanical species native to the United States, covering a wide area from New York State to Iowa in the east, down to Florida and Louisiana in the south. Although thriving in deciduous forests in its natural state, this Hydrangea is less demanding in terms of shade and soil than its Asian counterparts, and therefore easier to grow in our gardens.
Hydrangea 'Stand up Pink' is a recent horticultural variety introduced to the market in 2025. The shrub forms an upright clump 60 to 80 cm in height, with a spread of 90 to 100 cm. The bright green foliage is vibrant, formed of serrated, ovate leaves 6 to 20 cm long, borne on a 2 to 6 cm long petiole. The stems are straight and sturdy, allowing them to support the large inflorescences and not collapse under rain. These bloom from June until August, even into early September. The large heads are formed of very numerous small flowers about 2 cm across, of a very romantic old rose colour, or slightly more intense depending on the specimen, measuring up to 25 cm in diameter. Their size and light colour are highlighted by the darker vegetation. The fruits that follow the flowers are capsules, with no ornamental interest. This hardy plant is suitable for cold regions, as it renews its flower buds all summer and is will tolerate spring frosts.
Undemanding regarding soil nature, this Hydrangea tolerates varied conditions provided the ground does not dry out completely. It tolerates partial shade as well as sunny situations, but not scorching sun in southern regions. Easy to grow in any good garden soil, its compactness and floriferousness make it a very good choice for mixed borders. Pair it with spring-flowering shrubs like Forsythias, Spiraeas and Weigelas to enjoy a very long flowering season with easy-going plants. For autumn, also consider plants with decorative fruits like Snowberries and for winter, add plants with ornamental bark like the superb Dogwood 'Mid Winter Fire' with its almost fluorescent orange stems.

Hydrangea arborescens 'Stand up Pink' requires a position in full sun or light shade, in a humus-bearing soil, even if not particularly fertile. When planting, set it in deeply worked soil. A good base fertiliser (such as horn or dried blood) will encourage the establishment of your young plant and feed it without risk of scorching. The plant is very repeat-flowering; cut back the spent flowers regularly during summer. By late summer, stop cutting the flowers, as the large, dry umbels will protect the terminal shoots in winter. You can cut away all these dry flowers in late February or at the first signs of fine weather.
