Description

Hydrangea macrophylla Rembrandt® Elegant Rosa produces mophead flowers in changing pastel pink shades, which will brighten a terrace or shaded border for weeks. Its inflorescences open in soft pink, then gradually turn to tones of green, old rose and salmon as the summer progresses. Its compact habit, sturdy stems and good performance make this variety a reliable choice for the garden or for cut flower arrangements.

Hydrangea Rembrandt® ‘Elegant Rosa’ belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family and bears the code name HORE0031. It comes from the Rembrandt® breeding programme developed by the Dutch nurseryman Lendert de Vos B.V. This variety, dating from 2018, is part of the Rembrandt® collection, known for its compact hydrangeas with sturdy stems whose inflorescences change colour every 3 to 4 weeks. Their flowering typically extends over more than 100 days. The plant adopts a bushy, branching and dense habit, reaching 1 m to 1.20 m in height and spread in open ground. Its growth is moderate and steady. The foliage is deciduous, falling in autumn and reappearing in spring. The leaves are elliptical or ovate, 7.5 to 10 cm long, dark green and glossy, with a finely toothed margin.
The inflorescences are of the mophead type, slightly flattened flower heads 10 to 15 cm in diameter. The sterile flowers, numerous on each head, measure 4 to 4.5 cm across. The buds open lime green, then evolve into a soft light pink, sometimes accented with cream or pastel tints. At the end of the season, the tones turn to a slightly smoky old rose. As with most Hydrangea macrophylla, these colours can vary according to soil pH: in acidic soil, lavender shades may appear. The stems are robust, and the flowers have a firm texture. They last several weeks and fade gracefully.

With its softly evolving pink shades, Hydrangea 'Elegant Rosa' adds romance and colour to shady spots. You can pair it with blue-leaved hostas, a carpet of Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' or a border of heucheras 'Caramel', for example. In a pot, it will brighten a corner of a terrace in partial shade, accompanied by ferns with decorative foliage. With its compact and tidy silhouette, it is an ideal plant for small gardens.

Note: The colour of Hydrangea macrophylla flowers varies according to soil pH. Traditionally, blue varieties turn pink in neutral or alkaline soil. To maintain a beautiful blue colour, mix ericaceous soil or peat into your garden soil and apply aluminium sulfate (slate contains it) or alum each spring.

Planting and care

Plant Hydrangea macrophylla Rembrandt Elegant Rose in spring or early autumn, preferably in a partially shaded position, for example against an east-facing or even north-facing wall. It tolerates morning sun well. It will need shelter from cold, drying winds. It does not necessarily require acidic soil, but appreciates deep, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, possibly enriched with a good fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the foot of the wall, position the root ball at least 30 or 40 cm from the base and incorporate some well-rotted compost to better retain moisture in the soil. It is very hardy and will be fine planted in a cold region.
