More information

This new hydrangea produces pink and blue flowers on the same compact bush. Unlike other varieties, the colour of the flowers does not depend on the soil type or the use of products to change the colour. The plant blooms on both one-year-old wood and young shoots. It grows best in soil with little limestone in partial shade.

Description

The Hydrangea macrophylla 'L. A Dreamin' is an innovative hydrangea that can transform any setting. It produces pink and blue flower balls on the same bush, using one-year-old wood and new shoots, resulting in a long flowering period. The soil's acidity does not determine the colour of the flowers, and the use of colour-changing products is unnecessary. This small bush can tolerate pruning after flowering and provides beautiful flowers for bouquets. Hydrangeas do not require acidic soil; they grow well in regular, moist soil without limestone.

The Hydrangea macrophylla 'L.A. Dreamin' is a relatively rare species in our gardens, introduced in 2014. Belonging to the Hydrangea family and native to Japan, it has a compact, bushy and rounded habit, reaching up to 1.50 m (4 in 11 ft) in height if pruned.

From July to October, it produces large spherical flower heads at the end of its branches and lateral buds composed of small, fertile, sterile flowers with striking dimorphism. The fertile florets are well-developed and conceal tiny, less colourful fertile florets. This flowering occurs on deciduous dark green foliage, and the colour of the flowers varies individually from blue to pink, regardless of the nature of the soil.

The large leaves are opposite, ovate to elliptical, ending in a pointed tip and coarsely saw-toothed. They can reach a minimum length of about fifteen centimetres. Hydrangeas can live for at least 50 years.

The L.A. Dreamin' Hydrangea is a unique variety that can add a touch of personality to partially shaded areas, enhancing the gradient of its flowering. Hydrangeas are well known for brightening the north side of houses, but this one will thrive in an east or north exposure, making it suitable for all borders and hedges. This vigorous variety can be easily pruned, allowing it to be grown in a large pot. It can be placed on the terrace in a beautiful planter or near the entrance. You can pair it with Magellan fuchsias, Rodgersia, silver candlesticks, ferns, foxgloves, annual impatiens or plant spring-flowering bulbs around its glorious silhouette. Enjoy its sumptuous flowering in the garden or the house for a long time.

Planting and care

It's best to plant the L.A. Dreamin hydrangea macrophylla in spring or early autumn. You should choose a semi-shaded spot against an east- or north-facing wall. It's essential to protect the plant from cold and drying winds.

The plant needs a few hours of sunlight each day to get beautiful autumn colours. The plant doesn't necessarily need ericaceous soil but prefers deep, moisture-retaining, well-drained, and fertile soil. Before planting, enrich the soil with a good fertiliser.

If the soil is dry at the base of the wall, it's best to place the root ball at least 30 or 40 cm (11.8 - 15.7 in) away from the base. This will help retain moisture in the soil better.

The Hydrangea macrophylla is very hardy and can be planted in cold regions without fear. To prune your plant, remove the faded flowers on the topmost bud or the pair of buds directly below it. Next, cut back to the base by a quarter or one-third of the oldest stems. This will encourage the formation of young shoots. It's best to perform this pruning annually between March and April.
