Description

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Mme Emile Mouillère' is an old variety of hydrangea. Its abundant snowball-like flowers possess a unique charm appreciated for over a century. Blooming all year round in mild climates, it punctuates its inflorescences with a delightful pale pink or a soft almond green towards the end of the season. The generous bouquets are arranged on abundant foliage that turns purple in autumn. Classic and timeless, this variety deserves a place in every garden. It is a shade plant, vigorous in the ground and excellent in a large pot or container.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Mme Emile Mouillère' is a cultivar dating back to 1909. It is one of the many hybrids obtained from H. macrophylla and H. aspera, among others. The hydrangea family is native to China and Japan. 'Mme Emile Mouillère' is distinguished by its vigorous growth, reliability, and exceptional floribundity. It blooms all year round thanks to numerous lateral buds. This shrub is slightly taller than wide, reaching 1.50m (4.9ft) in height and approximately 1.20m (3ft 11in) in spread at maturity, with a fairly rapid growth rate. From July to September, it is covered with beautiful dense and round inflorescences, 15 to 20cm (5.9 - 7.9in) in diameter. The lovely pure white sterile florets gradually punctuate with a soft pink, then take on an almond green hue. The tiny fertile florets are barely visible, nestled within the globular head. The flowering is accompanied by abundant, medium green, leathery, deciduous foliage. It turns a beautiful purple colour in autumn. Hydrangeas can live for at least 50 years.

Hydrangea 'Mme Emile Mouillère' is a perfectly hardy shade variety. Hydrangeas are well known for brightening the north side of houses, this one thrives in the east with morning sun, or in the north, in flower beds as well as hedges. This variety is suitable for growing in the ground as well as in large containers placed on the terrace or near the entrance. Although these plants dislike lime, they are not strictly ericaceous plants. Pair them with Magellan fuchsias, annual impatiens, or plant spring-flowering bulbs in front of their round silhouette. Enjoy their sumptuous flowering for a long time in the garden or in the house as fresh or dried bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Mme Emile Moullière' macrophylla hydrangea in spring or early autumn, preferably in a slightly shaded location, for example against an east-facing wall or even north-facing. Protect it from cold and drying winds. It does not necessarily require ericaceous soil, but it appreciates a deep, moist and well-drained soil, fairly fertile, possibly enriched with a good base fertilizer before planting. If the soil is dry at the base of the wall, install the root ball at least 30 or 40 cm (11.8 - 15.7 in) away and incorporate a quantity of well-rotted compost to better retain moisture in the soil. Very hardy, it is ok to grow in cold regions.
