Description

The hydrangea or hydrangea paniculata Limelight Prime Proven Winners is an improvement of the famous Limelight® cultivar that produces large conical inflorescences over 20 cm long in a colour that starts off green, then turns white, and finally pink in autumn. The new variety does everything in superlative, on a more compact bush: more early, stronger branches to support the big flowers, more intense in colours. A lemon green before white, followed by red and pink in autumn. Fresh and elegant, with stems that are not very sensitive to the weight of rain-soaked flowers, it tolerates sun and slightly chalky soils.

The species Hydrangea paniculata is native to the temperate eastern regions of China and Japan. Like the species, Limelight Prime has excellent hardiness (down to -25°C), adapts to sun and relative drought, while being more tolerant of chalky soils than traditional Hortensia macrophylla. It forms a more compact bush than the original variety, reaching about 2 metres in all directions, with an upright and ramified habit, reaching approximately 1.40 to 1.60 metres in height by 80 cm to 1 metre in width, for rapid growth. Its flowering usually begins in early July and continues until October. Starting off lemon green, its slender panicles, 20 cm long, composed of rounded white florets, turn reddish and pinkish with the first signs of cold. Its sturdy branches easily support the weight of the flowers. They are covered with beautiful deciduous, dark green, ovate foliage.

Hydrangea paniculata Limelight Prime® thrives in any good garden soil, without too much limestone. Exposure to non-burning sun promotes the best colouration of the panicles. It lends itself to various uses in the garden: as a low hedge or in a bed in association with other hydrangeas or perpetual roses, creating beautiful contrasts of colours and shapes. Its stature allows it to be adopted in a small garden as a standalone plant, for example, or to be grown in a large container on the terrace where it can live for many years with some fertiliser inputs and regular watering.

Planting and care

The Limelight Prime hydrangea should be planted in humus-rich, neutral to acidic soil. During planting, ensure it is placed in well-prepared soil. A good base fertiliser, such as bonemeal, will help establish your plant and provide nourishment without burning it. If your soil is dry, incorporate our water retainer, stockosorb, into the soil when filling the planting hole, and create a watering basin on the surface. At summer's end, avoid cutting the dry umbels; they protect the branch tips through winter. For larger inflorescences, prune annually in March. Without pruning, you'll have numerous but smaller blooms.
