Purple is a relatively rare colour among hydrangeas: it ranges from deep purple in H. macrophylla Deep Purple to mauve-lilac in H. 'Tiffany', and even violet-blue in H. 'Hopcorn'. Generally, these varieties show their best colours in acidic to neutral soil, as their blooms often turn pink-red in alkaline (limestone) soil.
That said, the varieties of the wild species Hydrangea aspera all have charming flat inflorescences in shades of purple-lilac, with paler peripheral flowers. These shade-tolerant plants should be planted sheltered from the elements and have the advantage of retaining their colour regardless of soil type.
