Description

The Lagerstroemia indica 'Kimono' is a crepe myrtle flowering from July to October in beautiful compact bouquets of white flowers with gold yellow stamens.

Originating from Asia and Australia, the Lagerstroemia 'Kimono' is a vigorous, hardy bush, which can reach 5m (16 ft 5 in) in height at ripeness. The deciduous leaves, opposite, oblong, dark green, turn fire red in the autumn. The bark is marbled like that of a plane tree. Its flowering in terminal white panicles, with gold yellow stamens very bright, cover the entirety of the foliage.

The Lagerstroemia indica 'Kimono' is not demanding about the nature of the soil, provided it is well-drained and the exposure is very sunny. It prefers a rich, deep, humus-bearing, non-limestone and not too dry soil during the summer. In spring, prune short leaving only two or three buds per branch.

The Lagerstroemia indica 'Kimono' is often grown on a stem as a standalone specimen, in a pot on a terrace or in bush beds.

Advice: In cold regions, wrap the entire branches in a winter veil all winter.

Planting and care

The Lagerstroemia indica 'Kimono' is planted in the spring in well-drained, rich soil in a warm and sunny location. Each year, enrich the soil around the base with decomposed manure and leaf compost. Carry out a short pruning in the spring, leaving only two or three buds per branch. Treat against powdery mildew. In cold regions, wrap the entirety of the branches in a winter veil throughout the winter.
