After the promises, the reality! The bush, delivered at the end of March 2024 and planted immediately, has taken root perfectly. The flowers are very abundant and are starting to bloom—it's truly spectacular and very encouraging. This is genuinely a very promising variety. For comparison, the "standard" bush of a classic variety, bought and planted at the same time nearby, has also taken root perfectly but bears only a single flower.

Description
The Magnolia (x) soulangeana André Leroy is an old variety still praised for the beauty of its flowering, its ability to bloom from a young age, and its very harmonious rounded habit. Its large tulip-shaped flowers, with a deep pink colour on the outside, bloom abundantly from early spring, enhancing the ample branches of this small tree before the leaves appear. Hardy and undemanding, this magnolia will thrive in any soil that is not too chalky, provided it is fresh and well-drained, and sheltered from cold winds.
The Magnolia x soulangeana 'André Leroy' belongs to the very ancient family of Magnoliaceae, mainly found in East Asia. It was introduced in 1892 in Angers by the nurseryman André Leroy. The first Magnolia x soulangeana themselves resulted from a cross-breeding carried out in France by Étienne Soulange in the first half of the 19th century, between the Magnolia denudata, a tree with pure white flowers, and the Magnolia liliiflora, a bush with purple flowers. The resulting hybrids have intermediate characteristics, with slow growth, a more modest size, and flowers more or less marked with dark pink.
The Magnolia de Soulange 'André Leroy' is therefore a descendant of these first hybrids. It is a fairly modest variety (about 4m (13 ft 1 in) in all directions after more than 10 years), with a ramified and bushy habit, with spreading branches. The flowering is generous, occurring in April-May on the still naked branches, even on young specimens. The flowers, large cups measuring 7.5 to 15cm (3 to 5.9 in) in diameter, resembling tulips, emerge from purple-pink buds and open to reveal a white interior. The heart protects the beautiful bouquet of golden stamens. The deciduous leaves, ovate and of a tender green colour,........, appear afterwards. They turn yellow in autumn before falling.
Hardy and long-lasting, the Magnolia de Soulange 'André Leroy' is undemanding as long as it has a deep and well-drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral, remaining fresh even in summer. The only real difficulty is finding a location well sheltered from cold winds and late frosts, which can damage or even destroy the delicate flowers and young foliage. This small tree deserves a place on its own, in the middle of a short grass meadow or a bed, but it can also be associated with other bushes or small trees within a grove. Consider, for example, Acer palmatum Atropurpureum, Red Majestic twisted hazel, and Amelanchier Lamarckii as companions.

Planting and care
The Magnolia x soulangeana André Leroy is grown in partial shade or sunlight, full shade is not suitable for it, nor is scorching sunlight. It is wise to find a place sheltered from cold spring winds to maintain a beautiful flowering. Avoid an east-facing exposure. Plant it in a cool, rich, deep, and well-drained soil, neutral to acidic, with a slight limestone limit. In a strongly limestone soil, mix compost and a bit of heather soil with your garden soil, you will need to amend with iron or organic matter from time to time to replenish the stock of minerals available for the plant. In case of drought, follow the watering of young plants for 1 or 2 years after planting. Afterwards, water only in case of abnormally prolonged drought.
Pruning consists of removing dead or diseased wood as well as crossing branches. To keep some space under the branches, remove low branches gradually before they become too big, pruning branches with a too large diameter weakens the trees.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
