Description

Malus Red Obelisk is a ornamental crab apple tree with large decorative bright red fruits.

A medium-sized shrub or tree, Red Obelisk has a beautiful upright habit, reaching a height of 4 to 5 meters. It maintains a beautiful shape without the need for pruning.

The flowers, in the form of red buds are followed by pale pink flowers, and occur in numerous small clusters from April onwards. Its dark green foliage is deciduous, with oval, alternate, dentate leaves, turning orange-yellow in autumn.

In autumn, the shrub produces miniature, oval-shaped fruits, 7cm (3in) long, the size of an apricot, with a bright red colour. Highly appreciated by birds, these fruits remain on the tree for half of the winter.

Malus Red Obelisk is a very good pollinator for early-flowering fruit trees. It thrives in all types of soil, preferably fertile and rich and well-drained, with a sunny exposure.

This cultivar requires little maintenance, and the variety is highly resistant to diseases.

Planting and care

Easy to grow, Malus Red Obelisk requires a sunny position. Install it in full sun or partial shade in moist, fairly rich but well-drained soil, giving it room to spread. Dig a large planting hole.
