More information

This sacred Bamboo is distinguished by its young leaves which are beautifully coloured in scarlet red. Finely cut, they gradually turn chartreuse green and then green in summer, before being tinged with purple-red in autumn. In summer, large panicles of small white flowers appear and are sometimes followed by red fruits. A decorative evergreen bush all year round, compact, elegant and easy to grow in ordinary soil, even when dry in summer.

Description

Nandina domestica Sienna Sunrise is a variety of Sacred Bamboo interesting for the delicacy and superb colouring of its foliage, but also for its low, fairly wide habit, in a large ball of almost feathery appearance. It is adorned with fine leaves that successively change from scarlet red in spring to green in summer and then to purple-red in autumn. Its clusters of white summer flowers, transform into clusters of red fruits at the end of the season. Versatile, accommodating, highly architectural and decorative throughout the year, this small evergreen bush finds its place in flower beds, as a standalone or in large borders, and will be well showcased in a large pot on the terrace.

The 'Sienna Sunrise' Sacred Bamboo belongs to the berberidaceae family. This shrub is a horticultural selection of Nandina domestica native to India, China, and Japan. Its growth is quite slow, and its mature size will reach about 80-90cm (31.5-35.4in) in height and 1.20m (3ft 11in) in width. This plant forms several upright and branched stems from its rhizomatous stump. They resemble bamboo stems and are adorned with leaves divided into long, narrow, and pointed leaflets. Its growth is dense, compact, and beautifully rounded. The plant is beautiful all year round: its young purple-red shoots produce leaves in shades of orange and scarlet red, which then turn chartreuse green and dark green in summer, finally turning red-orange to violet in autumn. In June-July, it produces large conical panicles of cream-white flowers, measuring 30 to 40cm (11.8 to 15.7in) in length. If the summer is long and warm enough, these are followed by abundant clusters of highly decorative bright red fruits. It is preferable to plant another Sacred Bamboo nearby to obtain fruits, as the plant is not self-fertile. The fruits persist on the branches for a long time in winter.

The Nandina domestica Sienna Sunrise is particularly attractive in large groups. It can be paired with a Mexican orange tree, Japanese 'Little Princess' spireas, 'Fire Glow' euphorbias, Isalia ground cover roses, or daylilies, for example. This small bush will also be magnificent in a large pot on the terrace, in a non-scorching exposure with correct watering requirements. In a large border, it can be accompanied, for example, by Lespedeza thunbergii and dwarf abelias.

Planting and care

Plant Sienna Sunrise Sacred Bamboo in soft, deep, well-drained soil, even slightly chalky, moist to occasionally dry. Once well established, this plant tolerates summer drought well if the soil is deep. It prefers sunny, non-scorching situations or partial shade, but can also grow under sparsely wooded cover. Avoid drying winds and reserve a sheltered location away from severe cold. This bush is hardy down to - 15°C (59°F) under optimal conditions. Protect its base with a thick layer of dead leaves before winter in the coldest regions. If the above-ground part were to freeze, prune the plant to ground level in February-March. Pruning is limited to removing dead wood and excess or weak branches in winter.
