Description

The "Petits Nandinas for terrace and balcony" collection brings together three varieties of Nandina domestica, or sacred bamboos, perfectly suited for container gardening. These small-sized shrubs, with evergreen foliage, offer a range of colours that evolve throughout the seasons. In summer, they are adorned with delicate white flowers, followed by clusters of bright red berries. Resistant to cold and drought, Nandinas adapt to most well-drained soils and thrive in both full sun and partial shade.

The collection consists of:

1 Nandina domestica 'Twilight': This small upright shrub reaches a height of 90 cm to 1.20 m and a width of 50 cm. Its young shoots are coppery pink in spring, and its leaves turn light green with creamy white variegation, intensifying in colour during winter. Its panicles of white flowers appear in summer, followed by decorative red berries in autumn.

1 Nandina domestica 'Lemon Lime': More compact and bushy, this variety can reach a height and width of 70-80 cm. It stands out with its bright yellow-green foliage in spring, which turns light green in summer. The shrub rarely blooms.

1 Nandina 'Obsessed Seika': Not exceeding 1 m in height and 80 cm in width, this variety is appreciated for its intense red foliage in spring and autumn. It blooms in summer and bears fruit in autumn.

These Nandinas should be planted in spring or autumn, in a well-drained soil, preferably non-limestone. Choose pots with a diameter of at least 40 cm, equipped with drainage holes to avoid excess moisture. Plant one shrub per pot. Use a lightweight potting soil, enriched with compost or organic fertiliser, and add a layer of gravel or clay pellets at the bottom of the pot for proper drainage. Water regularly, especially in summer, but make sure the substrate dries slightly between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to prevent root freezing. Apply a surface mulch to maintain moisture and protect the roots from the cold.

To create an exotic setting on your terrace or balcony, combine these Nandinas with some pots of Heucheras 'Lime Marmalade', their lemon-green foliage will enhance the colours of the Nandinas. Place the Heucheras in pots of similar size, next to the Nandinas. Add grasses such as Carex 'Everillo' in a pot, whose golden reflections will further highlight the beauty of the sacred bamboos. Hostas 'Francee', with their delicately variegated leaves, will bring a touch of elegance to the ensemble. Arrange these pots in a balanced manner, playing with heights and colours.

Planting and care

The small Nandinas in this collection are particularly well-suited for container gardening. To succeed in growing them in containers, choose pots with a diameter of at least 40 cm, equipped with essential drainage holes to prevent excess moisture. Use a lightweight potting soil, enriched with compost or organic fertiliser, to ensure long-term nutrition. Place a layer of gravel or clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to ensure optimal drainage. Water regularly, especially during hot periods, making sure the substrate dries slightly between waterings. During winter, reduce watering to protect the roots from freezing. To maintain a beautiful appearance throughout the year, apply a surface mulch, which will retain moisture and protect the roots from temperature variations. A balanced fertiliser in spring will stimulate growth and enhance foliage colours.
