Populus deltoides Fuego - Eastern Cottonwood

This new cultivar of Populus deltoides is still rare. This medium-sized tree has splendid triangular leaves in bright red in spring, carried by dark red branches speckled with beige. Its foliage turns dark purple-green in summer. The young tree has a columnar habit that widens with age. It can be planted along an alley or in a grove to enhance other foliage. Easy to grow and fast-growing, it appreciates deep and fertile soil.

Originally from eastern North America, the Populus deltoides or "Eastern Cottonwood" gets its name from the triangular shape of its leaves. It was imported and cultivated in Europe for its easy-to-work wood. It grows quickly and forms long straight trunks. It reaches a height of over 20m and forms a wide and rounded crown. Its deciduous triangular leaves measure up to 12cm (5in) wide and have dentate margins. It appreciates deep and fertile soil. Cold and heat do not bother it, it is suitable for both the north and the south as long as the soil remains moist. It has a shallow, spreading and powerful root system: it should not be planted near buildings or a drainage system.

The variety Populus deltoides 'Fuego' presents a remarkable foliage, which changes from scarlet red to dark purple-green in summer. The leaves are wide and have a leathery texture. It can be pruned every year in spring: it can then be maintained at 2m (7ft) in height and obtain even larger leaves! Left to grow in an open and sunny space, it can become a beautiful specimen planted alone or in a group. It can integrate as a discreet charming element in a windbreak hedge: its dark foliage has the effect of extending the boundaries of the garden optically!
