Description
Rhododendron Hino-Crimson, a Japanese Azalea or Hybrid Rhododendron is a dwarf bush with a fairly compact ball-shaped habit. This robust and vigorous species grows in snowy zones. Blooming early, it flowers from March to April. It offers a generous flowering with clusters of small trumpet-shaped flowers that emerge before the leaves. Measuring 1 to 3 cm (0.4 - 1.2 in) in diameter, these fluffy flowers are a delightful bright red.
Originating from Japan, this Azalea can reach a height of 60 cm (23.6 in). The foliage of this azalea is dense and dark green, turning bronze to red during harsh winters. The small leaves are evergreen and measure from 1 to 4 cm (0.4 - 1.6 in) in length.
It is most commonly used in mass plantings in acid soil, rockeries, borders, or in clear understory. It can also be grown as a standalone bush. This is a bush that can be placed on terraces or in conservatories in pots.

Planting and care
The Azalea japonica blooms abundantly in shaded areas. Plant it in peaty soil, moist but well-drained and especially non-chalky. When planting, make sure not to bury the root ball too deep, it should be at ground level. Water generously during dry periods, at least once a week for the first year. In spring, apply fertilizer for ericaceous plants. After flowering, you can prune lightly to keep the plant tidy, but it is not necessary. Remove faded flowers to promote the appearance of new shoots. The Azalea has few diseases when well-established outdoors. It can be attacked by weevils that eat the edges of the leaves and rootlets, as well as by the famous "rhododendron beetle" which rarely causes damage. If the soil is chalky, if the plant is planted too deeply or if the soil is poorly drained, the leaves may turn yellow.
