Description
The Salvia 'Wendy's Wish' is a new hybrid sage variety, a shrubby and floriferous plant that looks beautiful in ornamental gardens and flower pots. It is a perennial sage grown annually and forms a compact yet very floriferous small bush. This plant produces flowers of a vibrant purple-pink colour from summer to frost, which look shiny in the sunlight and emit a citrus fragrance. The light spikes of flowers are held on red stems that bear slightly aromatic foliage. This less hardy perennial can tolerate heat and requires well-drained but not too dry soil to thrive in a sunny or partially shaded location.
Salvia 'Wendy's Wish' is a hybrid sage discovered in an Australian garden in 2005. It is believed that this plant is a result of a cross between Salvia buchananii and Salvia chiapensis 'Purple Majesty'. However, some think it shares traits with Salvia mexicana 'Lolly'. This Lamiaceae family plant starts with herbaceous vegetation but quickly becomes slightly woody and forms a small, high, and wide bush that reaches an average height of 55 cm (21.7 in). Its flowering period is quite long, from the end of June until autumn. The flowers are of a stunning fluorescent magenta-pink colour and line along reddish stems, making the plant a beautiful sight. Small elongated flowers emerge from brown calyces with a grooved surface and measure about 5 cm (2 in) in length. They only last one day, covering the ground with their petals in the evening, but are promptly replaced the following day. The deciduous foliage has triangular, dentate-edged, medium-green leaves that are slightly aromatic. This sage is drought-tolerant once it has been established.
This shrubby sage is less hardy (-7°C or 19.4 °F in well-drained soil). It goes well with the summer and blue flowering of perennial geraniums such as 'Rozanne', Agastaches, and perennial flaxes. It creates a fabulous combination with autumn asters, especially those that require little maintenance, such as Aster laevis, Aster turbinellus, or Aster amellus. You can also pair it with other plants such as Gauras, tall sedums like Sedum 'Matrona', shrubby potentillas, and plants with beautiful autumn foliage like Euonymus alatus 'Compactus', Nandina domestica 'Firepower', and Miscanthus sinensis 'Afrika'.
If you want to place it on the terrace, putting it in a large pot next to Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron' and Lobelia 'Hot Royal Blue' would be ideal. These plants' contrasting colours and silhouettes will create an elegant and fantastic picture.

Planting and care
Wendy's Wish Sage is an easy-to-grow plant that can be planted throughout the year, except during periods of frost. It is best to plant it in spring for colder regions. The plant can withstand temperatures as low as -7°C if it is grown in a sunny and sheltered position with well-drained soil enriched with gravel or coarse sand. It is a plant that thrives in a light, moist soil that is well-drained. It is also suitable for dry soil, so it is better to avoid over-watering and forget watering instead. Plant with organic fertiliser and as winter approaches apply a mulch or cover the plant with horticultural fleece. Watering in summer is essential to encourage flowering. Lightly trim the stems that compromise symmetry and cut them back to 20 cm (7.9 in) from the ground after the last heavy spring frost (in March-April, depending on the region) for pruning. Whenever possible, remove faded flowers.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
