Planting and care

Amelanchier × lamarckii is best planted from autumn to early spring, outside periods of frost, in full sun so that it colours better in autumn. Plant it in a deep, humus-bearing, moist but well-drained soil, preferably acid to neutral. A slightly chalky soil may be suitable if it is neither shallow nor dry. Loosen the soil thoroughly and incorporate well-rotted compost if it is poor. Water regularly for the first two years and mulch to limit drying out in summer. Once well rooted, the shrub tolerates moderate periods of drought, but grows and colours better in a soil that retains moisture. Pruning is not necessary. Remove suckers only if you wish to train the plant to a limited number of trunks.
