Stewartia pseudocamellia

Stewartia pseudocamellia is a decorative tree in all respects: the flowers, the fruit, the autumn foliage, even the bark - everything is beautiful in this Asian species. A member of the Theaceae family, like camellias, it resembles them a little when it blooms, but has its own charms.

The flowers of the Stewartia are large pure white corollas delicately fringed on the edges, with the centre illuminated by beautiful golden yellow stamens. They individually last a short time, but the flowering sometimes spans 8 weeks. The very elegant fruits that come next are rounded shells, slightly pendulous, opening in 5 segments.

It is a small tree or large shrub that can reach up to 12m (39ft) in its natural habitat but will rarely grow to more than 4 to 5m (13 to 16ft). Its low-branched conical habit is highlighted by its unique red bark that flakes off. It is quite hardy once established, but young plants can suffer from severe frosts. Unlike its close cousin the camellia its leaves are deciduous, and in autumn they take on such beautiful red and orange colours that it would be a shame if it were evergreen.

As Stewartia pseudocamellia remains relatively compact, it is suitable for gardens of all sizes that offer a small corner of light shade. Preferring acidic substrates, it is best to plant it in beds of ericaceous soil, in the company of Hydrangeas, Kalmias or Andromedas for example.
