Description

This is a collection of 3 Lilacs with single and fragrant flowers in different colours, 3 excellent varieties that have proven themselves in gardens. In addition to their magnificent spring flowering, these tall bushes are perfectly hardy and adapt to almost all regions. They can be used in groups, as informal hedges, or in the background of flower beds. You can also perfume your interior with bunches of lilac.

The collection consists of:

-1 Syringa vulgaris 'Comtesse D'Harcourt': a variety reaching a height of 4 m, whose crown often produces shoots. Long branching clusters grouped in two or more, reaching 20 cm. Flowers are pure white and slightly fragrant.

-1 Syringa vulgaris 'Souvenir de Louis Spaeth' ('Andenken an Ludwig Späth'): an old German variety reaching a height of 3.50 m, one of the most robust and vigorous with very large clusters of flowers (30 cm) in a rare burgundy-purple. Light, very floral fragrance.

-1 Syringa vulgaris 'Sensation': a variety reaching a height of 3 to 4 m, awarded in England. Its flowering is bicolour, violet bordered with white, which is relatively rare among lilacs. It blooms a little earlier than other lilacs and has a less pronounced fragrance.

These worry-free bushes decorate and perfume the garden in the heart of spring. They can be planted in a large informal hedge or a flower bed, in deep garden soil, even clay-limestone soil. Their crown often produces shoots, which allows them to regenerate but takes up some space. In a hedge, keep a minimum spacing of 1 m between each lilac plant, 1.50 m if you choose other bushes and small trees as companions. Lilacs blend well with ornamental apple trees, flowering cherry trees, or garden mock oranges, for example.

Planting and care

Lilacs appreciate full sun, in deep, fairly rich, well-drained soil. They can tolerate any type of soil, but prefer slightly alkaline soils and are sensitive to strongly acidic soils. They also grow in partially shaded areas, but flowering will be reduced. They are easy to grow and only need mulching in dry climates to maintain some moisture. Water them during the first few years in pronounced drought. You can cut the flowering branches to make beautiful bunches, or at the end of flowering to promote the emergence of new flowers and prevent the bush from getting tired. Avoid severe pruning that limits flowering the following spring, unless your lilac becomes too large.
