A set of 2 white polyethylene protection nets, measuring 3m (10ft) x 1m (3ft) x height 0.70m (2ft), with very fine mesh (0.6mm (0in)), including 10 integrated stakes. This device creates a natural barrier against carrot fly and protects all young plants from insects. It is installed as a preventive measure around the growing beds, starting from March-April depending on the region.

It is made of white polyethylene with mesh fine enough to prevent adult insects from approaching the planting beds to lay their eggs. The carrot fly is a small insect similar to a black, slender fly less than 5mm (0in) long. It is the females that actively seek out rows of carrots and other vegetables in the apiaceae family (parsnips, celery, parsley, etc.) to lay their eggs at the base of young plants. They are active in spring, from March to May depending on the region (with a north-south variation). Eggs hatch into small whitish larvae that feed on the roots they dig into. There are usually 2 generations per year, sometimes 3 in milder areas. The tunnels created in the roots make them unfit for consumption. It is therefore important to preventively combat the carrot fly before the first adults appear.

Tips: avoid sowing or planting your carrots next to other plants that are sensitive to the carrot fly (parsley, parsnips, celery, chervil, etc.). On the other hand, certain vegetables like leeks, garlic, or onions, or plants like marigolds, coriander, or lavender, all highly fragrant, seem to deter this insect from the plantations it seeks.

Directions for use Use this protective net as a preventive measure to protect your vegetable plantings, such as carrots and other vegetables that are sensitive to these types of insects (celery, parsnip, chervil, and parsley...). It should be set up in the spring, from March to May, if possible before the first adult insects start flying over the young plants. Place the protective net all around the sowing or cultivation beds, gently pushing the stakes into the soil to stabilise the whole structure and avoid leaving any openings at ground level. Avoid using this net in areas of the garden that are highly exposed to the wind.
