Description

Narcissus 'Golden Bells' blooms in March. Each bulb develops 6 to 10 stems, each giving rise to 2 to 5 flowers grouped together. The funnel-shaped, golden yellow flowers measure 3 to 5cm (1 to 2in) in diameter. They are beautifully fragrant. This variety of daffodil is very floriferous.

Narcissus 'Golden Bells' is known for its small size, reaching a height of 12cm (5in). This very hardy plant has deciduous ensate leaves, with entire green edges. The foliage is very fine. It is native to France, Switzerland, and Italy. It is ideal in borders, rock gardens, woodland areas, and pots.

Their flowering harmonises with that of hyacinths and tulips. Narcissus 'Golden Bells' resembles Narcissus bulbocodium, but is larger in size.

Daffodils are increasingly popular today because they are synonymous with spring.

Planting and care

Place the bulbs in full sun or partial shade in light, fairly fertile, well-drained soil that remains moist during the growing season. It can be neutral to acidic. Plant them in deep and firm soil at a depth of 15cm (6in). They come back every year. At the end of flowering, cut the leaves only when they have withered, not before. The bulbs use the foliage to replenish their reserves and prepare flowers for the following year.

You can place them in a container and combine them with perennials that will bloom later in the season.

Daffodils may be susceptible to narcissus fly and eelworms, but only in large-scale cultivation, so it doesn't have any impact on the garden. Watch out for slugs, collar rot, and various fungal diseases and viruses (yellow streaks).
