Description
Fritillaria imperialis 'Aureomarginata' is a rare perennial that blooms in spring. In April, a beautiful crown of 3 to 8 pendant bell-shaped flowers emerges. The flowers are bright orange in colour and measure from 2 to 6cm (1 to 2in).
Also known as Crown Imperial, this fritillary has lovely bright green and golden yellow variegated foliage that sets it apart. The deciduous leaves measure from 7 to 20cm (3 to 8in) long. At maturity, it can reach up to 75cm (30in) tall.
Originating from southern Turkey to Kashmir, it is a very hardy perennial. It is one of the most resistant and tolerant varieties. Grow it in sunny flower beds, borders, and rockeries. The large bulb emits an unpleasant odour, which has the benefit of repelling rodents.

Planting and care
Fritillaria imperialis 'Aureomarginata' thrives in full sun. It needs light, but not necessarily direct sunlight. It ideally thrives in a continental climate where winters and summers are dry and springs are humid. Plant it in fertile and well-drained soil. Avoid heavy soil, as it may lead to the development of fungi. If drainage is insufficient, the fritillaria may rot. Plant it from September to October by adding sand, gravel, or pumice to the planting hole. Place the bulb at a depth of 20cm (8in). In winter, we recommend mulching the fritillaria. Remove faded flowers if you do not want them to reseed.
