Description
The Crocus vernus 'Silver Coral' is a small spring-flowering bulb as charming as it is easy to grow, which brightens borders, lawns, or rockeries in late winter. Very hardy and reliable, it captivates with its large white flowers touched with light violet at the base and its ability to naturalise quickly in sunny spots in a lawn, rock garden, or at the foot of deciduous trees.
The crocus 'Silver Coral' is a recent cultivar selected from Crocus vernus subsp. vernus, also known as spring crocus, a botanical species native to the mountains of central and eastern Europe. It belongs to the Iridaceae family and grows from an underground bulb. This small 10 to 15 cm plant forms a clump of linear, dark green leaves with a silvery central stripe, which appear at the same time as its large, solitary, cup-shaped flowers. These bloom from the first fine days, between late March and early April, for about three weeks. Each flower presents a delicate contrast between white petals and a light violet-tinted base, and closes at night or in bad weather, opening better under the sun's rays. The foliage fades in spring some time after flowering, and the plant enters summer dormancy until the following autumn. Very hardy (down to –29 °C) and undemanding, this variety thrives in well-drained soil, in sun or light shade.
The spring crocus offers the garden its very first splashes of colour, adding a touch of freshness and elegance, from the end of winter. With its large, luminous flowers, the 'Silver Coral' is ideal for creating natural colonies in lawns, at the edge of borders, along paths, or at the foot of deciduous bushes. It pairs perfectly with other early bulbs such as Crocus chrysanthus 'Advance', snowdrops (Galanthus) or small botanical daffodils. In pots or planters, it enlivens balconies and terraces from the first rays of sunshine. For a beautiful effect, it is recommended to plant the bulbs in tight groups. Once established, they naturalise easily, multiply year after year and require little maintenance provided that the foliage is allowed to yellow naturally after flowering before removing, so that the bulb can replenish its reserves.

Planting and care
The Crocus Silver Coral is easily cultivated in most of central Enrope. Preferably plant the bulbs in a sunny location, but they will also accommodate in partial shade that is not too dense. In all cases, sun is essential during flowering. Plant the bulbs from September to December, avoiding frosts, in any light, cool, but well-drained soil.
The Crocus is a plant that tolerates summer drought quite well, a period during which the bulb rests underground. Place the bulbs with the tip facing upwards, at a depth of 5 cm and 5 cm apart, or in groups of three every 15-20 cm. In a pot or planter, plant the bulbs closely. After planting, do not disturb the bulbs. Once flowering is over, cut off the faded flowers and leave the bulbs in the ground; they will form increasingly floriferous clumps. Do not cut the foliage before it turns yellow. If you wish to remove the bulbs, wait until the foliage has dried.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
