Description

Tulipa 'Maureen Double' is the double form of T. 'Maureen', possessing the same qualities. This variety has long and sturdy stems that bear an alabaster, creamy-white flower at their tip. Each perfectly round and double flower is randomly adorned with marbling and pale green and pink flames, scattered on the sepals outside the corolla. It is one of the last to bloom, in May. This reliable variety establishes itself in the garden for a long time. It is particularly easy to combine with other flowers in beds and bouquets.

Tulipa 'Maureen Double' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the group of 'Late Double Tulips', whose main characteristic is to present double and crumpled peony-shaped flowers carried by weather-resistant stems. 'Maureen Double' is large (60cm (24in)) with imposing double flowers measuring 8cm (3in) in diameter. The flowers resemble those of a peony. Each flower is different, adorned with variegated outer petals ranging from light green to dark green. Flowering takes place at the end of the tulip season. Its foliage is composed of wide lanceolate leaves finely edged in white.

Tulipa 'Maureen Double' is ideal in large beds with perennial plants and tulips with various colours. They are unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens. This tulip beautifully decorates balconies and patios. When designing your flower beds, you must consider the height and flowering period of the tulips, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make superb cut flowers that last a long time in a vase. It is ideal for creating elegant bouquets, in the company, for example, of T. 'Astarte Design' (raspberry red with a white edge), T. 'Carnaval de Nice', white lunaria, and red lilies. Only use a small amount of water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

About botanical species: tulip species are found throughout most of the Old World, from Western Europe to China and Japan, including Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution range also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

There are various wild species, many of which are endangered. These include large adventive tulips from cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), as well as small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, they are called "botanical tulips", and one of the most common is the wild tulip (T. sylvestris), which used to often grow sheltered by vines and whose subspecies, australis, is known as the southern tulip.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
