Description

The 'Wirosa' Late Double Tulip is a historic variety introduced to the market in 1945 and awarded in England by the prestigious R.H.S. This variety embodies the epitome of romantic tulips! Its peony-like flowers are fully double and of a beautiful size, delicately bicoloured, with petals of a bright red-pink widely edged in white and cream. They bloom at the end of the tulip season, on top of short and sturdy stems. Tulips are more durable in climates that experience cold winters and hot, dry summers.

The 'Wirosa' Tulip belongs to the Lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the group of 'Late Double Tulips', but also in the section of Peony-flowered Tulips, whose main characteristic is to have very double and crinkled flowers, with generous forms. 'Wirosa' is not very tall (35-40cm (14-16in)) and its flower is of a beautiful size, up to 12cm (5in) wide, globular, double, and well arranged. Its colour, a combination of pink-red and cream-tinged white, is both very harmonious and well contrasting. The flowering takes place in mid-May, at the end of the tulip season. Each stem, very sturdy, bears a single flower that holds well both in borders and in vases. It is also a plant that has very good hardiness. The foliage consists of large lanceolate leaves, bluish-green with a slightly greyish pruinose appearance.

With their rich colours and long-lasting opulent flowers, peony-flowered tulips are renowned for their use in borders as well as for enhancing bouquets. They are unparalleled for bringing whimsy to pots or sunny gardens when planted in groups. This 'Wirosa' variety pairs well with a white variety like 'Mount Tacoma' or a cream variety like 'Charming Lady', for example. In the garden or in pots, double tulips are complemented by small flowers such as forget-me-nots, daisies, dame's rocket, pansies, and honesty. Don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your borders, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make stunning flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Planting and care

Place the 'Wirosa' tulips in a sunny or partially shaded location, sheltered from strong winds, from late September to December for spring flowering. Plant the bulbs in light and well-drained soil, loosened to a depth of 15cm (6in). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart without allowing them to touch for a mass effect. Cut the flower stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them. Tulips do not like stagnant moisture and prefer climates with distinct seasons, cold winters, and hot, dry summers.
