Graden Merit
This variety is a close variation of the popular 'Calgary' tulip, from which it borrows its beautiful pure white colour and enhances the yellow flame that accompanies the outer tepals of this beautiful tulip. Its single and pleasantly scented flowers are suspended on short stems. This compact variety, particularly suitable for companion planting and resistant to water, blooms in mid-April, rather towards the beginning of the tulip season.

Description

The 'Calgary Flame' Triumph Tulip is a variety similar to the popular 'Calgary' tulip. On a short stem, it offers an early-blooming tulip with large single flowers, featuring a wide yellow flame on pure white. Truly delightful and radiant, it has received an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. Its small size makes it perfect for windy areas or in pots and containers. It blooms at the beginning of the tulip season, along with other short spring bulbs, forming beautiful duets with grape hyacinths.

The 'Calgary Flame' Tulip belongs to the Lily family. Originally cultivated, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, which is characterised by narrow cup-shaped flowers. Carried by sturdy stems averaging 25 cm (10in) in height, the flowers of 'Calgary Flame' emerge just above beautiful glaucous foliage, composed of broadly lanceolate leaves measuring 10 to 35 cm (4 to 14in) long. These are simple corollas, 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter, white, slightly fragrant, in the shape of a cup, with six "petals" (more precisely tepals), the outer part of which is extensively washed with yellow. Flowering usually takes place in mid-April (sometimes early May depending on climatic conditions). The foliage yellows and then disappears a few weeks after flowering, while the bulb enters dormancy. It will regenerate in late winter.

This 'Calgary Flame' tulip is ideal for border ornamentation or even for containers to place on your terrace or balcony. You can also cut the flowers to make beautiful, long-lasting bouquets. Plant your bulbs of this very pretty tulip in small groups among forget-me-nots, grape hyacinths, small lavenders, not far from roses or your favorite shrubs. Don't forget to consider the height and flowering period of the tulips when designing your flower beds, as these parameters can vary significantly from one variety to another. It is interesting to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, for example, not far from the vegetable garden.

Planting and care

Place the 'Calgary Flame' triumph tulips in a sunny location or partially shaded and sheltered from the wind. Plant the bulbs between mid-October and mid-November for optimal spring flowering. Plant the bulbs in well-drained and deeply loosened soil at a depth of 15 cm (6in). Space the bulbs 10 cm (4in) apart without touching each other for a mass effect; cut the flower stalks after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
