Description

The 'Unique de France' Tulip has an extravagant flowering, astonishing foliage, and a simple shape. The flamboyant beauty of its shiny scarlet flowers is accompanied by the simple form of a narrow corolla perched on a thick and sturdy stem. The foliage is light green and has a waxy substance that reflects light uniquely, forming a superb setting for these vivid red flowers. 'Unique de France' blooms in the middle of the tulip season, in the heart of spring, depending on the climate.

The 'Unique de France' Tulip belongs to the Lily family. Of horticultural origin in 2002, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to have flowers in a narrow cup shape. The elegant, uniformly red, squarish, narrow cup-shaped flowers are perched on stems 40 to 45 cm (16 to 18in) high well above the widely lanceolate, light green, iridescent leaves. They are carried by very sturdy stems, unaffected by bad weather, in April-May.

The 'Unique de France' triumph tulip finds a place in large flower beds. Its pure colour allows for associations with tulips in white or pink tones, creating a beautiful contrast. Pair it with forget-me-nots, daffodils, jonquils, hyacinths, Corsican hellebores, and euphorbias to create different scenes. It can also be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots and containers. This tulip will decorate balconies and terraces very well. It is ideal for cut flowers. Only a small amount of water is needed in the vase, just enough to cover the bottom! If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant 'Unique de France' Triumph Tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Unique de France' tulip will thrive in soil which is moist to dry in summer. Plant it in sun or partial shade. Once flowering is complete, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
