Description

The Darwin Hybrid Tulip 'Rosy Delight' is an exceptional and delightful variety, with large, thick, dark pink flowers with a white base and slightly paler edges. Belonging to a new line of early-flowering Darwin hybrids, with more durable flowers, 'Rosy Delight' is a vigorous variety with strong, weather-resistant stems. It blooms in the heart of spring. Sculptural in borders, it is an exceptional flower for bouquets.

The 'Rosy Delight' Darwin hybrid tulip belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, Darwin hybrid tulips are characterized by large, single, egg-shaped flowers that appear in the middle of the season, borne on long, weather-resistant stems. Tulips in this group are the most cultivated for the cut flower trade. 'Rosy Delight' will reach 45 to 55 cm (18 to 22in) high when in bloom. Perched on sturdy stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the large flowers are elongated, elegant,  deep pink fading towards the tips of the petals. The colour is enhanced by the slightly waxen and translucent texture of the petals. The corolla opens, revealing an almost red heart around a white centre.  The flowering takes place in April-May, with each flower living for several days before wilting.

The 'Rosy Delight' Tulip will fit well in large borders, and bouquets. Combine it with narcissus, daffodils, hyacinths or even alchemilla, Corsican hellebores and euphorbias, and you will create surprising borders. It can also be planted in flower beds, pots and containers. This tulip will look great on balconies and terraces. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials and is ideal for creating elegant bouquets, with lilac for example. In a vase, just a little water at the bottom is enough! If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant 'Rosy Delight' Darwin tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), with a spacing of 10 cm (4in) in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well worked and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as it could cause the bulbs to rot. Rosy Delight will thrive in soil which is moist to dry in summer in a sunny or semi-shaded spot. Once flowering is over, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
