Description

The Forster's Tulips in this mix are hybrid varieties resulting from cross-breeding with a particularly reliable and resistant botanical tulip. Their early spring flowering extends from mid-March to mid-April, depending on the plants, in a palette of radiant tones including yellow, orange, red, and white. The beauty of the flowers is enhanced by abundant glaucous green foliage. Tulips fosteriana are appreciated for their longevity in the garden, their sturdy flowers, and their ability to easily naturalise in any well-drained soil.

The Tulipa fosteriana or Foster's Tulip is a highly hardy wild species native to Turkestan. Modern tulips descended from this species are officially classified in division 13 and are considered reliable: they are among the first tulips to bloom, sometimes as early as 15th March, they naturalise and multiply easily, so there is no need to replace them regularly. The plant produces short, sturdy but flexible stems, 30-35 cm (12-14in) in height when in bloom, bearing at their tip a cup-shaped corolla that opens and widens in the sun to reveal a deep and wide yellow throat adorned with very dark macules. Beneath this flowering, there is a broad basal foliage, strongly tinged with grey. The foliage yellows and dries up at the end of spring, marking the bulb's entry into dormancy.

Fosteriana tulips are suitable for all uses, in beds, borders, and even in bouquets for the tallest varieties. Their sparkling yet elegant colours blend well with blue hyacinths, grape hyacinths, or other tulips. When designing your beds, don't forget to consider the height and flowering period, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make beautiful long-lasting cut flowers.

Planting and care

Plant your fosteriana tulips as soon as possible in a well-drained soil, even dry in summer. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 15 cm (6in) (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch each other. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stems and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them.
